mental illness or menopause?
« on: November 04, 2021, 08:43:28 PM »

Hi,  I'm trying to get some advice from anyone with experience of mental illness and menopause.  I have suffered from depression and GAD since teenage and was stable for a few years before I was 49 and started to have worse mental health symptoms and perimenopause.  I am now 53 and 2 years past menopause.  I haven't tried hrt as I have been put off by scares but now I don't feel I have mych to lose.  I have recently had to give up my job and my relationships are blown apart  :'(.  I would like to try hrt now but it seems such a mindfield.  I don't find my local GP helpful as they insist that my mental health issues are not hormone related so Im concerned they will not treat it as this.  Also if the hrt gives side effects how long does it take to get out of your system if you stop?  Any advice would be great. Thank you  :)

Hi!  Anxiety levels can be affected by hormonal upheaval so you are not alone.

Have you been treated with specific medication for the depression and GAD?  I've taken ADs since 1988 and had my first panic attack at age 3.  Treated with appropriate medications over the years and most days, I'm OK.

Mental health and hormones were researched by Dr Kathleen Dolton (? Dalton ? ) who began the National Association for Pre-menstrual Syndrome (NAPS).  They advised me to eat every 3 hours, 24/7 that is in the night too.  A drop in blood sugar can cause anxiety surges, PMS is in the 10-14 days prior to a period.  Symptoms stop once the bleed starts.

How R your periods ?  Do look for 'hints for husbands', print, read and hand over to those people in your group.  Do read the 'bladder issues' and 'Vaginal Atrophy' threads.  It is thought that HRT is the be-all-and-end-all to solving anxiety during peri-menopause but for us who are already affected, I would push for appropriate mental health medications if you think that you need them.

Then read about HRT.  It's replacing the hormones that your body would be making, as oestrogen levels drop symptoms can be difficult to deal with.

Your GPs are Oh So Behind  :bang: we know what is hormonally affected and what isn't.

Join in.  Ask away.  Which symptom would you like to ease first?

Maybe write down all your symptoms and compare them to those in the 'Advice for Husbands' pinned post, and particularly those that appeared when peri started. I haven't had MH issues but suffered from anxiety and low mood because of meno so sadly no surprise you have been worse.
Transdermal hrt (gel or patch) has little increased risk of cancer and less than smoking or being overweight. You can mitigate any health risk by maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
Lack of knowledge amongst GPs is a problem. Mine wasn't recognised because I had plenty of symptoms but not hot flushes. If your GP is just as ignorant it might help if you have them... Most women are absolutely fine on the first hrt they try. You get a skewed view on this site because most people are here because they're the few who have problems. Good luck with it, let us know how you get on.

I suffered from extreme anxiety after stopping HRT, so I know it’s definitely hormone related. My dr wasn’t convinced it was down to them… but I was absolutely fine before, and practically had a nervous breakdown within a week of stopping. Drs just don’t seem to be geared up on the mental health issues dropping hormones cause.
Venlafaxine has been a life saver for me.

Ask to be referred to a menopause specialist x

Thank you all for your replies. Im going to make an appointment with a specialist so I can get started I'm a  relatively healthy non smoker so it was reassuring to compare the risks to my overall health.  I know there are no promises of quick fixes but I feel more positive now.  :thankyou:
I'm hoping hrt will improve my mood and brain functio. I was told by a  consultant that hrt was more effective for physical symptoms so thAt put me off as well
I will let you know how it goes. Thank you for sharing  :thankyou:
