GP appointment
« on: November 02, 2021, 06:39:35 PM »

I had an appointment with a young male GP today (only appointment I could get before end of month). I explained my symptoms were mainly low mood, anxiety, low libido, occasional hot flushes and digestive issues. He said HRT would not be appropriate as I wasn’t experiencing enough of the “climatic “ symptoms such as night sweats and regular flushes ! Suggested CBT for the anxiety and gave link to NHS I talk !

Grrrr... I suggest a knee applied to the groin. Have you complained about him?

I suggest you write to the Practice Manager asking where the most knowledgeable menopause management is in the practice, naming the individual who has fallen short and let you down in this regard.

It’s so maddening when things like this occur with GPs.  I had a male GP last week who couldn’t give me any help with my HRT problems (waste of a telephone appointment) and so I had to wait until yesterday for a very helpful GP.   I would ring and speak to reception to find out the best GP for menopause help.

So where is the British Menopause Society in this, we are told that GPs are being educated  :-\.  I agree with Postmeno3.

Many GPs still won't consider peri-menopause unless a lady goes in complains about hot flushes and a loss of periods.  Otherwise they still aren't getting it - mayB print out all the symptoms, 36 to date, and hand to him?  He obviously isn't married to a menopausal woman  ;D

I'll hold him sheila - haven't you got some wool clippers (can't remember the name) to be used?  ? daggers ?

'climatic' symptoms ? he's been watching too much about COP26.   :bang: :bang: :bang:

Disgraceful but exactly what I was on the receiving end of too. I then had to pay to go privately before they diagnosed early meno on both symptoms and blood tests. I think it's less about one bad doctor, the whole system and education around it is just flawed.

I agree with post meno - don't give up, write to the practice manager xx

He really didn’t have a clue! I think he was one of the many student Drs my surgery has. Can never get an appointment with an experienced GP! I will contact the practice manager to ask if they have a GP or nurse who specialises in peri/ menopause. I doubt it though!
It was a waste of time which I knew it would be !

Do persevere. I know it's frustrating and exhausting, but once they get it that you're serious about your concerns and that your health is important to you, you'll be surprised how quickly things change. I've figured out if I choose to fume quietly and act as if invisible, the practice is perfectly happy for me to remain "unseen". Good luck!

Ask if there is a Nurse Practitioner.  They often know more than GPs ;-).

GPs have to learn.  MayB ask for a meeting with that young GP, Practice Manager and discuss your symptoms?  Point them to MM ;-).
