What is typical oestrogen level if post menopausal
« on: October 31, 2021, 10:53:44 AM »

If getting bloods taken , is there an oestrogen level that indicates  definitely not post menopausal? My recent bloods were 232 (something) and gp said thats fine and definitely not post menopausal.Am taking cerazette so no periods for years. I'm aware that levels can vary from day to day during perimenopause but can't find information online that shows what levels of oestrogen a post menopausal women typically has.

Menopause = literally the last monthly period.  We need to allow at least 12 months after that B4 we can say we have gone through peri-menopause.  Blood tests are reliably unreliable  ::)

Hi Bungo - how old are you?

Reference ranges vary according to the lab but here is one I found:

Children: Less than 130 pmol/L
Males: Less than 146 pmol/L
Females:
Follicular: 72 – 529 pmol/L
Ovulatory: 235 – 1309 pmol/L
Luteal: 205 – 786pmol/L
Post-menopause: Less than 118 pmol/L

https://www.southtees.nhs.uk/services/pathology/tests/oestradiol/

So if you are not taking HRT and only Cerazette then unlikely you are menopausal I would say - from your results. Also from what I recall Cerazette depresses oestrogen levels anyway.

Hurdity x

PS - CLKD she is not having periods as she takes cerazette so no way of knowing....

Thanks for responses. Another thing I've been curious about. I know oestrogen levels can fluctuate wildly during perimenopause , and that's how symptoms/mood etc can come and go during this time..So in the final year before "menopause day", are oestrogen levels less than the 118 pmol/L . Would symptoms be consistent during this final year and thereafter ,rather than the huge swings you get during perimenopause? Maybe this would indicate to me that am post menopause or very close to it? I'm thinking after I start hrt, I won't know when am post and when my partner and I can stop using condoms( I plan on stopping cerazette at same time as start hrt in a few months)

I think I read somewhere that cerazette does suppress oestrogen during ovulatory phase. I've had osteopenia for years so thinking I shouldn't have been on it throughout my 40s . Am 52 next February so can't be far off menopause
