Pop for hrt progesterones??
« on: November 06, 2021, 09:37:52 PM »

I have been posting on another thread as I definitely need more Oestrogen, BUT no hrt tablets come with dydrogestone, other than with 2mgs of oestrogen. An extra patch does the job, but I cannot tolerate the other progesterones offered as part of hrt sooooooooooooo
I’ve been doing some ‘investigation’ 😂
I’ve been thinking ........
Does anyone know if you can use patches and the mini pill as the progesterone???
I LOVE dydrogesterone ( the one in femeston) , none of the other typical hrt progesterones agree with me, sooooooo I was thinking as I need more oestrogen than the 2mg femeston gives me, then is it possible to use the mini pill with desogestel ( similar to dydrogestone)  for 14 days a month and 100mcg patches???
Just wondering if there is some major no no with this combo- it might just ‘solve’ my troubles ( although probably not 😂)

I’m sure I remember DR Newsome saying there were some studies to suggest POP being sufficient for the progesterone part of HRT but that was to be used continuously.

Hi Sgtvhilts - having just looked this up - apparently there was an HRT preparation containing desogestrel as this trial shows: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/8429799/. Presumably discontinued? The dose used was 150 mg for 12 days per 28 day cycle. The mini pil cerazette contains 75 mcg desogestrel. Often with HRT the amount for continuous use is half that of cyclical use so using that logic it may well be that 75 mcg daily(as in Cerazette) would be sufficient though obviously off-licence.  If you wanted to use it cyclically then you would need double ie two pills. It is absolutely absurd that our licensed choices for the progesterone part of hRT are so limited given the length of time we spend in post-menopause!! Having said that it may not be sufficent with 100 mcg patches depending on your absorption but if you can get a knowledgable specialist (or GP) to prescribe it then go for it!
