Anyone on continuous Utrogestan 200mg?
« on: September 02, 2021, 01:17:35 PM »

Hello ladies,
there's a separate thread on Estrogel/Utrogestan but its really long so I thought easier to start a new one on this specific question.
Is anyone on continuous Utrogestan with higher dose (200mg) and has it worked for you?

I'm on EstroGel and sequential Utrogestan 200mg, but due to symptoms related to fluctuating hormones, gynae has suggested I could try taking Utrogestan continuously with higher dose to create more stable levels and benefit from the calming effect.

I know the usual dose is 100mg but that didn't seem enough for me when I tried it earlier in the year and didn't provide enough help for sleep. 200mg does cause tiredness in the morning but if it creates more stability I'd be willing to take that trade off. Also remember reading from somewhere that higher constant dose of Utro could possibly block ovulation in some women, which would be great. (unfortunately don't remember where I read that)

Any experience on this? Thanks xxx

By coincidence, I had an appointment with a private consultant this morning and she suggested that might be something I try. I’m currently on continuous 100mg utrogestan orally every night (I’m post menopause) but am still having some palpitation issues at night so she said this might help my sleep even more and  to settle my cortisol which is all over the place at the moment.

Hi Ella,
This was suggested to me also, mainly to control bleeding.
I did however take the 200 at night, to see if it helped with sleep.
It did calm me, but I felt so rough next morning and quite hung over.

I would probably give it more of a go if I didn’t have to get up each morning for work, but I’m in a busy school and can’t afford to feel so awful each day.

Best of luck

Hi Appey, this is interesting, I'm also suspecting I have issues with high cortisol as I'm waking up so early in the mornings or even in the middle of the night. I will give this a try and see what happens as I seem to generally tolerate utrogestan quite well -except for the next morning tiredness, but maybe that would settle over time as well.

Do I remember correctly from another thread that you also had issues with EstroGel and patch absorption being too fast? This has been my main struggle and still is -how to create stable oestrogen levels with transdermal. I'm back to gel now for 5 weeks after unsuccessful trial with patch, but not convinced this will be the solution as I'm really not improving as I was hoping for. Have you found a solution?

Hi Nas, its true, it does impact me as well in a way that I feel tired and dopey the next day. However, as my current two main problems are insomnia and anxiety, I'm thinking if it would help with these, I'd be willing to put up with tiredness, especially as not sleeping makes me feel even worse.

I'm just thinking as it seems there are very few ladies who are on this regime if it actually helps... one would think if utro 200mg was the solution to help with anxiety/insomnia, it would be used more often...But maybe the limiting factor is also that many ladies are very sensitive to even smaller doses of progesterone.

I'm on 100mg PV nightly, and i'm considering going to 200mg (with consultant of course), as it helps my anxiety and sleeping....the grogginess does lessen over time, or it did with me after a few weeks. I cant use it cyclically because i feel awful when not on it, even though i couldn't tolerate any other progesterone before this one xx

Hi Ella
Perhaps give it a go.
Ultimately utrogestan is meant to protect the lining of the womb, but if you can get some peace and sleep from the extra dose, what have you got to lose?

I totally know how you feel from the lack of sleep, it’s dreadful.
Lack of sleep also exacerbates anxiety and it becomes a vicious circle.

Keep us posted.

Hi Ella
Just to follow up on your question above…
The consultant I had an appointment with has prescribed me Biest which is 80% estriol and 20% estradiol. This is a gentler formula, which I imagine you can only get through a private Bioidentical consultant. I am waiting for it to arrive so haven’t started it yet and am still soldiering on with half a pump of oestrogel at the moment.
I’ve kept to 1 utrogestan at the moment and have slept through for the last couple of nights 🎉 (sounds like I’m a baby 🤣🤣) She has also prescribed me testosterone as my levels were low. Really hoping all of this will help with the fatigue and muscle aches.

Hello I'm under a specialist too and put on a similar regime for pretty much the same reasons: I need a steady state to avoid peaks and troughs.

I don't do well at all on 100mg - it makes me incredibly anxious and cry uncontrollably. People don't seem to realise that progesterone has a bimodal dosing effect whereby small and large doses can have negative effects on those of us who are prone but a moderate dose can be better tolerated.

I'm only on day 10 today so still adjusting to side effects: no libido, night sweats (both only started since the Utrogestan), really anxious in the mornings.

I'm looking for some reassurance that the side effects will settle. As I say 200 much better than 100 but don't feel myself yet.

My specialist says 4-6 weeks for a new hormonal regime to settle, particularly those of us with hormonally sensitive brains.

I have developed a post menstrual mood disorder in the last two years - I'm 46, I suspect related to early peri menopause - and trialled sequential HRT (felt awful on oestrogen phase). Currently on a trial of progesterone only for this as I don't have any symptoms of low oestrogen so far and regular periods.
