MIRENA - morning sickness and headaches
« on: December 28, 2020, 07:25:40 PM »

Hi, after a nightmare trying to find a HRT regime to suit me and also trying different ones for several months at a time, I had a Mirena Coil fitted under a GA while I was having an emergency hysteroscopy 8 weeks ago.

The reason for this was I have been bleeding more or less every day for 2 years, with the hysteroscopy being done urgently due to sudden flooding.  I was on Estrogel 4 pumps and Utrogestan for 12 months previous.  I saw an excellent menopause specialist who had me in hospital in a flash to check it wasn't anything sinister.  It isn't and they fitted the mirena and prescribed Vagifem because my I have a very atrophic endometrium and they said it would also help with the bleeding.

So this is the thing. The pain in my breasts has almost resolved, the initial bloatedness etc is better.  Most of all the bleeding has stopped! (For now!)   All great, BUT I am suffering awful morning sickness (actual vomiting) and headaches.  This happened when I started my HRT journey 2.5 years ago on Femoston and it never got better, hence me seeking extra help back then.

So what I am desperate to know is will this nausea and the headaches settle down after my body has adjusted to the Mirena?   My specialist seems to think they will, but I feel so disappointed that I have to tolerate yet more stuff to get any benefits.

Thanks x

Hi, sorry you are feeling so bad. I wish I had an answer for you. I'm on mirena coil and 75mcg estrogen patches. Had my coil fitted under general anaesthetic as well. I'm only a free weeks into it. Had coil fitted the 2nd of December so still early days. I am struggling with lightheadedness and dizziness.not sute which is causing what but hope mine settles. Are you only on progesterone? Sounds terrible the vomiting etc.i suffered nausea on bcpbefore to the point I vomited and I had awful sickness when pregnant where I vomited everyday like clockwork so i feel awful for you. I hope you get answers soon and start to feel better soon.

Thanks Peri

No, I'm on Estrogel 4 pumps with the Mirena fitted to stop the bleeding as I need the progestrone as I still have a womb.

I know it's not the oestrogen, it is definately just the different progestogen I have to have via the Mirena.

I just wondered if anyone else had similar symptoms with the Mirena and did they subside x

Hi Jasmine3234, I am on your regime (2 pumps and recently added a pump).  Still getting side effects from it.  I had my Mirena fitted in December also at the same time as having a polyp removed.  I just wondered how things are for you now?

I had the Mirena coil fitted and after having a period for 8 weeks solid and feeling absolutely awful to the point my sister said I was walking round like a zombie and feeling so out of it they removed it.  However, I have friends who have said it was the best thing ever for them. Hope it works for you :)

Hi Jasmine3234, just wondering if your nausea and vomiting ever resolved......I replied to you back in December but I find myself  now having the same issue. I've been vomiting every morning like clockwork and I know I am not pregnant. Like you i have the mirena coil fitted. I have mine since December. Just wondered if you found a solution? Thank. I hope you did.

Hi, sorry I've only just seen this.

I had to have my Mirena removed early January this year due to the headaches and vomiting (I gave it 3 months).  After a couple of weeks this settled down.  I am basically progestrone intolerant.

I have been through a lot of **** since, recently been in hospital for another hysteroscopy and they removed some thickening/growth which I am waiting for biopsy results.  But one thing I can say is that if you havent settled down by now then it is unlikely the mirena is for you.

I am back on Utrogestan 100mg nightly, which I did tolerate before, it was the problem bleeding that came with it.  This time I'm using it vaginally.  It's too early to say if things will settle, but my only other option is hysterectomy.

Please, if you are still feeling awful with the Mirena then get it taken out. xx

I agree with Jasmine I gave my mirena 6 months but had to have it taken out.  My symptoms settled within 48 hours of having it removed.  I wouldn’t ever have another x

Thank you Jasime3234 and Perinowpost. Yes, I think I will definitely get it removed. I must just wait for my gp to come back from holidays. I hope you are both doing well. I think I may not tolerate progesterone also. It's such a struggle this time of life. Why some suffer more than others. 🙄
