Exercise
« on: August 06, 2021, 08:15:27 PM »

Hi ladies

How many of you exercise on a regular basis and how do you motivate yourself?

I’m reasonably fit as I walk my dogs a lot but I don’t do any exercise  that raises my heart rate so I have brought a cross trainer. But I just can’t motivate myself to use it on a regular basis, ideally 3/4 times a week. I’m annoyed with myself as when I do use it I feel great mentally but it seems to take me days to recover in terms of aches and pains and I think I use that as an excuse.

There are several threads about exercising on here so you'll see how we do - or not  ::)

I know that I should walk more but at this time of year it's either too hot, too wet or I'm busy in our garden.  We used to cycle but the roads are so appalling that we don't bother now.

 ;D

We have a cycling thread; 'dog breeds' ; many find swimming helpful and lots have started wild swimming.

What do you like doing the best?

Hi Lynda

I go to the gym about 5 days a week.   I usually do a 30 minute class. I find that easier as once you are in, you are there for the duration of the class.  Just going round the gym machines, its too easy to skip things and leave earlier!  when you first go to the gym you will ache afterwards, but after a few sessions, that diminishes significantly. I also try to walk or cycle (cycle paths only) most days.

I would go to the gym more often for longer if I didn't have to work, I love it.

Could you maybe break into a jog while you are out with your dog?

It never hurts to have a new thead ;-)

Wow Dougalina, that’s brilliant and very inspiring!

I don’t belong to a gym and really thought I’d use the cross trainer I have brought, you have given me some hope actually by saying that after a few sessions aches and pains deminsh, I need to just work through it.

CLKD, believe it or not I actually like the cross trainer but still seem to be finding excuses not to use it. I’m in The Highlands and wild swimming opportunities abound but sadly I am not a strong swimmer.

You can begin by paddling ?  with thick socks on  ;)

I can make excuses ............ is there a part of the day when you would be more inclined but not too soon after eating?

Well CLKD, it was meant to be in the evening, just before I shower but it’d definitely not happening enough.

This reminded me: 15 years ago I bought a holla hoop for a quid, as a kid I was really good with one  ;D.  Not as I aged though  ::)

I tried a skipping rope, found in the loft, from my childhood.  Nope.   :D

Hopscotch any1?

Before my surgery I did a bit of skipping and hula hooping, but haven't got back into it yet. I also did youtube fitness videos, mainly the ones where you walk and do exercises so nothing high impact. Currently I'm just slow walking the dog.
You will ache at first as it's muscles you haven't used, so try Epsom salt baths, but don't have too many in a row as they can dry your skin.

Is that 'elastics' Ju Ju - called French skipping in a novel I am currently reading.  Two people with elastic round the ankles, a 3rd jumps in out, in out .... and the elastic goes higher until they miss it?
