Nausea, hot flushes, low mood.....too much progesterone???
« on: August 02, 2021, 07:05:52 PM »

Hello,

Today has been a very difficult day. I woke feeling low but was light headed, sweating, jelly legs and just miserable. My hot flushes were constant all day and really intense.  I tried to go out and about doing odd jobs but I was lacking so much get up and go. I hate this. I'm starting my 2nd packet of Zoely pill in conjunction with the mirena coil. I know I'm supposed to give it at least 3 months which I am prepared to do but am I getting too much progesterone??? I feel so physically sick constantly and I've had every test and scan under the sun on the last few years that I know this is all just hormones.  Joint pain in lower back and hips and just constant nausea. I'm just confused as to why I don't feel better.
I don't know should I just take the coil out. I've had it since December and my mood has been flat since although it was semi flat before I got it. I just miss my old self .

Hi Peri-wrecked sounds like the mirena to me. The telling phrase is it’s been like this since December when you had it fitted. Received wisdom is to give it 6 months so it will settle but you’ve done that now. I had mine removed after 6 months as it never got any better. I’ll never forget the overwhelming feeling of well-being as the side effects left my system. That happened within 48 hours of having it removed, and I’d never have a mirena again. Let us know how you go on x

Hi Perinowpost,

Thank you for your reply. I think I was putting off getting the coil removed because I had heard for so many it was good and I really wanted to give it time to settle etc. I actually wanted to remove it a few times but I was scared to incase it messed me up more but I think I'll make an appointment to just remove it. I'm glad you felt better once you had yours removed. I hope you are doing well now. It is so hard getting the right mix.
Thank you again for replying.

Why were you given both? If you have a mirena you'd normally be given oestrogen only patch/gel/tablet. Giving you something that gives you both will result in too much progesterone. Rather than stop zoely would it better to change to add just oestrogen? That way you can control how much oestrogen you get. I agree your symptoms point towards low oestrogen but when I had too much prog I felt I needed more oestrogen but increasing it didn't help.

Hi Sheila, thanks for your reply. I was prescribed patches originally which gave me awful dizzy spells and vertigo almost.  I then tried tablet estrogen in 2mg I think it was and I got severe headaches/migraines which I have never suffered with before on those. I couldn't function when the migraines hit. So my gp decided I needed to have my own hormones shut down but she said we'd leave the coil in as it doesn't really give progesterone only localised (although she had mentioned mirena progesterone intolerance on a previous visit as I had an allergic reaction to a combined birth control pill with the same progesterone in it-but she made no mention of that at the last visit.)  I was doubting having both too. From what I read the mirena does give progesterone into the system so I'm wondering why she says it's just localised and not absorbed. It's confusing. I dont know what I should ask for next. The nearest menopause specialist is an hour away but she isn't helpful at all.  She inserted the coil for me under general anesthetic and told me to be on my way and take patches and "no need for a follow up"....... I've heard of a nurse locally that worked under her guidance and now works from another local gp office and I'm thinking I might try to see her for advice if she does them privately.
Thank you all for your replies. I guess I won't know the outcome until I actually try something else or stop something. I will post back if I start to feel better. Thank you all.

Hi Peri-wrecked all those professionals that say it doesn’t give progesterone into your system ought to try having the mirena theirselves they’d soon change their minds. Good luck with sorting this out I’m sure you’ll get there just persevere and do keep us posted x
