Specialist in progesterone intolerance
« on: July 27, 2021, 08:54:56 AM »

Hi everyone,

I would really like to see a specialist in reproductive depression/progesterone intolerance. I am lucky that I am able to pay at the moment.

Can anyone recommend me someone they have seen?

I am currently on Estradot patches 100 mcg for the past 2-3 weeks and need to find a progesterone. The NHS clinic keep suggesting I take utrogestan which I struggle with enormously (low mood, fatigue, anxiety).

I am having a bit of a tough time and would be really grateful if anyone could point me in the right direction. Feel free to direct message me if that is better.

Thank you so much.

Hi Mindfulmoomins,  I literally just posted this in another topic.  Sounds like we are both having the same issue though are you taking HRT for fertility or Menopause?  Mine is the latter so maybe we are needing different support.  Here is my post anyway....

Hi, can I ask for advice?  I'm using the patches and they are going well. Estradot 37.5.  It has relived my anxiety which is heaven sent !!  However, I cannot get along with the Utrogestan at all.  Tried it vaginally and still getting side effects.  Mainly poor sleep, vivid dreams and just feel terrible. I can't just progress with this one-sided type of regime and have to do something about the progesterone.  My lining has thickened slightly so clearly I have to make a call on this.  Has anyone chosen a hysterectomy just so you can stay on the Estrogen?  It seems extreme, but what choices are there??  If I can't handle the most natural form of Progesterone, I am sure the synthetics will be worse.  I have never had a Mirena coil or been on the Pill.  I am just so sensitive to this progesterone it seems. I actually do not even want to try a synthetic hormone.  This is all just to keep my anxiety under control.  Should I just take an Anti-anxiety medication and put HRT behind me ??

I would really appreciate some feed back because this is doing my head in just trying to sort HRT out.  I am very worried about my uterus so I need to make a decision.

Thanks in advance x

Hi Elm,

Yes, I am taking it for menopause. I am struggling with feeling low and anxious (although I was feeling better recently) but am having a dip.

I too really need to sort out progesterone too and am wondering about a hysterectomy. I would really like to see a specialist, even privately, to help me get things in balance and have the option of things that are ‘off license’.

I was able to tolerate utrogestan 100 mgs 7 days a month vaginally for the past few years but I hated it. Now I am wobbly I am not sure I could manage it. Perhaps once I have had longer on the 100 Estradot patch and feel better I could attempt it again.

Such a minefield!

Good luck with your search to find a solution too. Maybe we could have a thread for people with progesterone intolerance if there isn’t one?

So, are you just using the patch at the moment with no progesterone?

My GP, who is very Pro HRT, suggested I just start with Estrogen and let that settle, then introduce the utrogestan, vaginally, because then you do not need to use it every night. Plus most of the progesterone just goes to the uterus where it is needed. That made sense to me.

I had been on the fence about HRT but did heaps of research, mainly with Dr Louise Newson’s information through her website, podcasts etc. I decided to give it a go, but still have been anxious along the way. Anyway, my GP is really in favour of it, so I followed the method she prescribed. Now, I’m not so sure. The Estrogen is the easy part, but it’s just not an option to take it in its own. In hindsight, I should have just taken the two together and if it wasn’t working, I would have just walked away from it not knowing any differently.

However, having used the Estrogen for 8 weeks, I really like it and am worried about how to give it up without falling in a heap. I tried recently to just rip the patch off and forget the whole thing, but I felt terrible so went back on it.

How long have you been just using Estrogen? Have you had a pelvic scan? I did last week which is how I know the lining is slightly thickened. It’s only 5mm but it’s thicker than my last scan of 3mm so that’s not ideal. So, I tried the Utrogestan again for a week (every second night) and again, slept terribly, nightmares and panic etc.

You mentioned you took it for just 1 week every month for several years. Did this keep the uterus lining thin? Are you not keen to do this anymore?

I have an appointment with a Gynaecologist in 7 weeks to discuss a hysterectomy. I just think this is a very extreme option and I have to be certain that HRT is really worth it.

Does anyone have any advice on Progesterone ? Does it settle down or do you just have to put up with feeling terribly on it ?

Thanks for any help offered x

Can you take HRT for fertily issues?  I thought it was only for the menopause.

Hi Elm,

I have been using estrogen for a number of years and having a scan and yes, the 7 days a months of utrogestan did keep the womb lining ok although the meno specialists said I will need to do something in the next few years as it wasn’t ideal to keep doing what I was doing.

I did manage utrogestan for many years so once your estrogen is reasonable you might find it easier to tolerate.

Good luck x

If you have tried all conventional progesterone options and you are now considering a hysterectomy, please read my thread on compounded progesterone in the Alternative Therapies section.

I'll bump it up for you.
