Newbie - First Post and wanting advice please
« on: July 19, 2021, 12:42:52 PM »

Hi

This is my first post and I am in desperate need of some advice.  :-\

I am 49 years old and had a total thyroidectomy 17 years ago. Since then I’ve seen many private specialists over the years as never got on with levothyroxine and I was hypo for many years.

As a result of the levo and then adrenal fatigue I switched to T3 about 10 years ago but have continued to struggle with both low and high cortisol. My recent Genova test shows high cortisol and I take Holy Basil to try and reduce this. I was managing well up until March this year when the insomnia started (Similar time to when I had my first covid vaccine) I was going to sleep well but then waking for a couple of hours at a time. I took extra Holy Basil and found I was able to nod off again.

A couple of months ago I had my sex hormones tested as I suspected my progesterone was turning to cortisol. This resulted in me being Oestrogen dominant so I started taking DIM and DCG to try and balance things out.  This then made my insomnia worse and I stopped.

Around a month ago the night sweats started and I’ve been awake even more in the night! I am still having monthly cycles but definitely feel as though my hormones are totally out of control.

I am so fatigued, brain fogged, emotionally withdrawn and not the same person I was last year. I’m even finding it hard to write this as I can’t seem to think properly. Fortunately I am able to work full time from home, but am dreading having to go back to the office.

I spoke to my GP about the night sweats and she suggested HRT and has prescribed Elleste Duet. I don’t know if I am doing the right thing by taking them but will try anything to feel better.

Thanks in advance :)

Morning!

Who suggested your current regime of Holy Basil etc.?  Some find that any benefits from alternatives is lost when our hormones kick in and take over.  Where did you get your sex hormones tested, was this by blood tests which are reliably un-reliable  ::).  My gynae works on symptoms.

Some find that keeping a mood/food/symptom diary of use.  Your symptoms of fatigue etc. sound like peri-menopause, when did you last speak to a Consultant about your thyroid function which can be upset at The Change.

Browse round.  Make notes ;-)

Hi CLKD

Thanks for the response.

I have seen thyroid specialist in the past and am knowledgable in these and adrenal  issues. I have used supplements for years and have seen excellent results.

My GP tested them, but only did progesterone and Oestrogen. Yes it was by blood, but I had many symptoms to suspect Oestrogen dominance.

I dont use Endo's for my thyroid. They dont agree with T3 only,  I get support from specialist thyroid groups. I know my symptoms are not hypo/hyper from being under/over medicated but am aware that hormone imbalance can affect the absorption of my thyroid meds. My T3 was checked last week but it always comes back out of range and I am on T3 only.

Hi, I'm sorry you're feeling so rough & just wondered whether you think there's any chance your raised cortisol could be a consequence of your T3 monotherapy?  You say your T3 is always out of range, by which I take it you mean above top of ref range?

I'm also on T3 but in combination with T4 & know how complex the clinical picture can be at this stage of our lives, so you have my sympathies trying to work out what's going on.  Pity you've had bad experiences with endocrinologists as mine has been invaluable in helping me manage the HRT-thyroid replacement combination.

There's lots about thyroid on here so you may want to search for past threads.  Several of us have used T3 or NDT when Thyroxine has not been adequate.

I hope you find the HRT helps - as you are very clued up you will know to keep a close eye on your thyroid levels.
