Hi everyone
« on: July 22, 2021, 09:30:20 AM »

I’m being medically managed towards the menopause. I’m 47 has first mirena coil fitted 2 years ago 9 months later it fell out. Was reluctant to have another but specialist recommended another mirena along side of mini pill. Had mirena fitted in May but seems to have disappeared again awaiting scan end of August. Been bleeding for weeks now. Was given norethisterone but doctor has changed this to provera. Taken 6 tablets so far and bleeding a lot worse. Got an appointment with gp later. Hoping this can be sorted quickly as struggling day to day. The bleeding and clotting/cramping is absolutely horrendous. Luckily on school holidays now but need this sorted. Any ideas of what other treatment I can have please?

Hi Isabella. Sorry you are having such a troublesome time. Was the Mirena originally prescribed to control your bleeding and are you still on the mini pill?

There is another drug used to stop bleeding which has more success than Norethisterone called tranexamic acid so this might be better for you. I'm not sure how provera works but it doesn't sound good if the bleeding is still going.

I've not heard the term being medically managed towards menopause before. Have you any Meno symptoms yet apart from the change in periods?

I have stopped the mini pill thinking I might have to restart it. The mirena was to help with bleeding it did for a bit but has disappeared - doctor thinks it’s fallen out again. Gynaecologist has said no more coils. I have fibroids. Have had tranexamic tablets they didn’t work. Norethisterone did the first time I had it but last week didn’t work.
I had never heard of medically managed either - getting hot and bothered a bit but not aware of any symptoms yet. It’s the heavy periods that are driving me mad. Happened to my mum similar age she had a hysterectomy. But doctors not keen on that

R U in the UK?

Who is over seeing your medical regime?   4 me my periods waxed and waned for several years; with gaps of months B4 restarting but at least I didn't suffer the intense pains nor was the bleed heavy.  After a while I realised they had disappeared.

I had a few cold flushes from the back of my neck to the waist; as well as itching in that area.  A good hand cream sorted that.  After 4-5 years my GP diagnosed vaginal atrophy: do read the 'bladder issues' and 'VA' threads on here.  Make notes  ;).  It's The Change, does what it says on the tin.  Although we have similar experiences each of us will be 'different' if you get what I mean  :-\

Hysterectomy is major surgery and if you don't have particularly bothersome symptoms, then keep that womb for as long as possible.  Many Consultants are still 'whip it out' it will solve problems. Well nope.

Where are the fibroids, mayB blocking the space where a Mirena coil should sit?  I got called for lunch so have to stop  8)

Yes I’m in the uk. Ended up today in accident and emergency as bleeding so bad stuck on toilet for an hour. Rang 111 and they were going to call for an ambulance but that would take ages. Hubby dropped me off at the hospital got seen quickly.
Found out I wasn’t prescribed the correct amount of provera so it’s been upped plus now on tranexamic tablets and painkillers. Been referred to gynaecology for further investigation

Hopefully now you've been prescribed the correct provera dose the bleeding will stop. I didn't realise you have fibroids which do cause bleeding problems so if you can get these sorted then things should improve. If you put fibroids into the search box it will bring up posts from others with the same problem. Let us know how you are getting on.

I'm sure you've researched fibroids but I'm just posting the link anyway https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/fibroids/treatment/  ;D

There are quite a few treatments. A friend had a myomectomy which worked brilliantly for her and saved her going through a hysterectomy which she didn't want to have at her age.

Let us know how you get on.  Menstrual blood always looks a lot once it hits the water  >:(.  I had clotty periods for years with acute pains  :'(

Get those feet elevated in a cool place, drink plenty and doze.  Make sure that you don't become aneamic.  Who has referred you and are you able to take a cancellation appt.?

Thanks for responding. I will take any appointment I’m off work for school holidays so hopefully get something soon. I’m away a few weeks which isn’t great but we need a holiday. Staying in this country so if necessary will return for the appointment and go back.
Will look into a myomectomy not heard of it. Have started iron supplements awaiting blood test results which was checking my iron levels.
Bleeding seems a lot better which I’m glad as taking a lot of tablets!!!

Get those feet up and rest.

Take plenty of pads and pain relief on holiday.  Anywhere nice?
