Cervical stenosis and HRT
« on: July 13, 2021, 09:36:37 AM »

I am looking for some help with this issue. I am considering continuous HRT as I am now menopausal, but i am a bit concerned about bleeding that can possibly occur within the first 6 months and at any change of the prescription. I understand that there is no HRT that guarantees no bleeding at the start.
I was diagnosed with cervical stenosis last year when I had unexpected bleeding. I am worried that since then my cervix might have completely closed, however i can't check this - my GP said that for this i would need a hospital appointment. In that case any blood caused by HRT would stay in the uterus. The procedure for dilating my cervix last time was painful, and I am a bit worried that this would be needed every time when i experience withdrawal bleeding.

I would be so grateful to see if anyone has any experience or knowledge about this?

Hi Stella2. I'm not sure that anyone on here has been through this but it sounds like quite a difficult dilemma!

You have to be post-menopausal to use conti HRT which means no period for a year or be at least 53 years old. It sounds as if you definitely wont know whether your cervix has completely closed without an investigation but I can understand you don't want to go through the pain again.

Some women don't get any bleeding on conti HRT but you do need to have your questions answered about whether the blood would just accumulate in your womb if this did happen. Can you get a referral back to the gynae who diagnosed the stenosis? I realise that this will all take time but it is important to get it right for your own peace of mind.

Which meno symptoms are proving difficult at the moment?

Hi Taz,
Thank you so much for your reply and advice. I tried to research and find out if there is any HRT that will definitely not cause withdrawal bleeding but I don't think there is. It is all so individual. I think I will have to either get a proper check or just keep on dealing with it. My main problem are hot flushes and night sweats. I am post menopausal for 1 year.

Hi , I am not sure but stonsis of the cervix can be caused by menopause and thinned tissues etc. Theerfore could you ask for local HRt cream to use first on the inside for a while to see if that helps?

Thank you Pepperminty, I forgot to mention that I have started using vagifem, it has been eight weeks now, hopefully it will help, although not sure if it goes that far. Thank you for your advice!

Hi,  Fingers crossed it will help.  There is also the estring, which sits high up near that area and gives a low dose of estrogen. This also may be worth looking into with your doctor.
I think that a hopsital appointment would be a good idea with a specialist. Explain your concerns when/ if you see someone. HRT replaces what you are naturally loosing the estrogen. You do not to have any investigations if you are concerned , but a chat to a specialist may be enough to reassure you.

Let us know how you get on.
