Shake, rattle 'n' roll...how long does this last?!
« on: June 09, 2021, 10:33:37 AM »

Hello All,

I am new here, having taken a sudden and slightly traumatic dive into deeper perimenopause in Jan. 2021. Had various milder peri symptoms for about 4 years prior but now have symptoms with a vengeance! Have seen a menopause specialist and tried a low dose of HRT (half patch Everol Sequi) but my reaction was, as specialist described, 'dramatic' with all-night tremors. Guess my own cycle, still present, was trying to fight alongside. Periods are very scant and estrogen/prog on very low end of normal.

Am now taking agnus castus via qualified herbal practitioner, which does seem to be helping to regulate things a bit - early days yet.

However,  this is my question:
straight after my period ends, when I assume estrogen is rising, I have incredible jitters and shakes across my whole body that keep me up almost all night for 2 or 3 nights. It is horrible (as many of you will know). I think I am maybe hyper sensitive to the roller coaster nature of estrogen. Have any of you experienced this to this extent and, importantly, how long did it last (months, years??)? Does anything help?

I am 50 so probably not miles away from actual menopause. But the journey is wearing me down. Otherwise very healthy, take all the required supplements, exercise, control stress as much as possible, eat properly, etc, etc.

Thanks for listening! X

Morning.  I had the shakes: In the 1990s I contacted The National Association for Pre-menstrual Syndrome [NAPS] who told me to eat every 3 hours, 24/7 to ease any drop in blood sugar which can cause anxiety surges.  Which would floor me! the nausea was the worst feeling  :-\ and would be so sudden.  I try to maintain a regular eating pattern to this day/night.

Do U keep a mood/food/symptom diary, it may help to chart progress and feelings.  How are your periods performing?  Mine waxed and waned for years B4 finally ending.  I've been fortunate in not having too many other feelings .  Do read the 'bladder issues' and 'vaginal atrophy' threads, make notes ;-).

Some find herbals etc. help until their hormones kick in when any benefit may be lost.  Menopause is natural but symptoms can be awful.  Hence H Replacement T.  Did U watch the recent Davina McColl TV programme which was informative.

Thanks CLKD. Yes, exactly - how long is a piece of string? Guess I just wondered if others could say how long their 'string' had been.   ;D

I have kept a very meticulous diary since this all kicked off big time and am still keeping it. In the early days I couldn't eat at all (totally not me). Now I have an almost by-the-clock pattern, including a bed time snack. My family laugh because I am at the dinner table with dinner ready at 6pm come hell or high water, fork at the ready. They have never had such prompt service.

Periods are very regular but very light. Cycle shortened to 25 days from 30 over the past year. I have done a LOT of reading but couldn't find much on this shaking/jittering. Thanks for your reply, which is helpful.

I did watch Davina's programme and thought it was good...have also been on Louise Newson's website and saw a private menopause specialist here in Scotland who was great.  It's a bit of a minefield though, eh? Definitely no 'one size fits all' and a real shock if like me you have been a get-on-with-it Gen X-er who barely saw a doctor for years on end.

Just finding my way forward into this new land of menopause. Hate it a lot of the time and am intrigued at other times. Will jitter my way along until something new pops up to annoy me.

You jitter, you are in good company  ;)

Is the jittering related to eating, time of day .......... the waking hormone, cortisol  >:(, woke me any time after 3.30 a.m. and I would be terrified for hours.  Because it was such a sudden wake up!

Browse round.  Ask away!

It seems to be at its worst when estrogen is on the rise, particularly around Day 7 or 8 of my cycle. Goes on all night. I am not sure if it is because estrogen is on the rise, or should be on the rise and isn't, or something completely different like cortisol.

I also have it occasionally first thing on waking but that goes away once I am up and about.

I did feel anxious about it initially, now I am just furious to be disturbed like this!  >:(

I had a regular few days prior to a period when I felt lousy .......... but it went once the bleed began so I never thought about which hormones were causing it all.
