Vaginal utrogestan
« on: March 09, 2022, 05:06:19 PM »

Hello can someone offer advice please? I'm new to HRT, 1 pump gel and utrogestan 14 days. I'm interested in taking the utro vaginally as I would like to avoid the side effects I felt last month. I was tired/lethargic and had a big mood dip when I stopped taking it.

I've waited 2 weeks to speak to my GP about this,  spoke to her this morning and she said I can't take it vaginally as this is for women with vaginal dryness only. I think she's incorrect on this but I was to shy to question her.

Can anyone explain how I use utrogestan vaginally? I know it's one tablet but how often and when? Thanks for reading

Utrogestan is a form of progesterone. Some people find taking it vaginally causes less side effects for them. It can be inserted by putting the capsule inside with your finger. I was prescribed 100 to use daily rather then the 200 taken orally. I cannot understand why your GP said it is for vaginal dryness as usually estrogen cream helps with that.

She was clearly stumped by my question as she spluttered and stammered and then said it was only prescribed vaginally for women with specific needs ie vaginal dryness. Basically I don't think she had a clue.

So would I still use 1 tablet on days 15 - 26 only?

Hiya

The licensed dose is 200mg (i.e 2 x 100mg capsules) for 12 - 14 days each 28 day cycle.  I know some ladies do take a lower dose, but that should only be done under the supervision of a specialist x

Sorry, I do not know. I was put on 100 to take daily but that was by a menopause doctor. It is sad how ill informed some GPs are. If they do not know then they can always try to find out and get back to the patient.

The dose for sequi either orally or vaginally is 200mg x 12 days, days 15-26 where day 1 is the first day of your bleed. I use it vaginally but still get fatigue.
Louise newson says you can halve the dose if used vaginally, the manufacturer says the dose is the same regardless of delivery. I

Hi, I take the tablet at night at bedtime as it made me a bit woozy. I take it by mouth, not vaginally. It also helps me get to sleep taking it at night, whereas before I had a bit of trouble going to sleep.

Hi Gingercatmom

I took utrogestan regularly up until my hysterectomy. I used it vaginally. I was prescribed the oral tablets. I took 2 x 100mg vaginally to try and keep side effects to a minimum as I’m very progesterone intolerant. (Not everyone is though). I took mine for 10 days on the first of every month and then had a bleed.
This was advised to me by a specialist as it gets closer to where you want it to work without having to go through the digestive system.
This worked well for me. I’d put them in at night time.
I think your gp maybe confused with vaginal oestrogen which is for dryness.

Thankyou all so much. I think I'm going to keep taking it as prescribed but will save up to see a private menopause specialist.

Out of interest can you please explain what it feels like to be progesterone intolerant? Not sure what signs to look out for. I felt tired on utrogestan, but then felt worse moodwise when I stopped taking it. It's all so confusing

So usually, but not always, when you’re progesterone intolerant you will have had, or have PMT. Post natal depression is another indicator.
Feeling irritable, low, weepy, snappy, low on energy like PMT before a period.

Rather then save up to see a private specialist, you could ask to be referred to an NHS menopause clinic. You are entitled to see somebody there.

Ok thank you Louise2010, I do get PMT and I also had severe PND with my first baby. I'm actually scared to take the utrogestan, when my moods get low I'm terrified of the feelings I get.

Flossieteacake i didn't know I could ask for a referral, that's brilliant. Thankyou

Oh bless you I understand about that. I had PND too. It can be scary you’re not alone. Yes that’s good advice from Flossieteacake not always necessary to be forced to go to a private specialist.  :)
