Desperate.
« on: April 26, 2021, 09:19:11 PM »

I've been on HRT since 2019. I've been on almost every brand of patch available due to the shortages that occurred relatively recently. I'm currently on Evorel 125mg, and Utrogestan 100mg - taken vaginally.

I have tingling and numbness on my legs and arm, and a numb face. Severe tension headaches - literally unexplainable pain. I've not had my bloods tested until recently, which was prompted by a sudden development of a burning tongue, my headaches worsening and a terrible phantom smell. My bloods came back and I was told that all my hormones were low, oestrogen and testosterone. I've been put up to 125mg over a month ago, but my situation has only gotten worse, not better. My headaches, phantom smell and taste come in waves. I also have aches all over my body, between my shoulders and down my arms.

I'm literally at a loss as to what is going on, my GP believes I'm not absorbing the HRT. I've tried all the different brands of patches, including the gel.

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

I'm sorry you're having such a tough time. Maybe ask for a referral to a menopause clinic. There is an oestrogen implant but I think this will need a specialist. Oral may be worth a try too if you don't absorb well transdermally. Have you been tested for anything else? I know we can have all sorts of symptoms but these seem a bit out of the ordinary so just wondering if something else is going on.

You are describing the typical symptoms of low vit B12, especially the tongue.

It's common for women to suddenly experience issues with vit B12 during the menopause.

Have you been tested? Note that even if you have and results came back 'normal', you can be experiencing symptoms of low B12. Have a look at the pernicious anemia page, a lot of info there.

Hi LillyWilliams,

Sorry to hear you're suffering. Your symptoms are typical of migraines, you have what they call "aura" symptoms (numbness and phantom smells), but of course you have to get that investigated. Migraines are usually related to fluctuations in oestrogen levels, maybe you have to change your HRT to a more stable regime to avoid these fluctuations. Migraine aura can be scary but nothing sinister is happening.

You may not be absorbing much estrogen as your symptoms are some of the ones I have. Im having trouble with absorbing transdermals. Its a constant struggle and its the waiting to see if the next thing works, its brutal it really is.
