At my wits end! Problems with Utrogestan
« on: January 20, 2021, 09:51:53 AM »

Hi, I'm really stumped what to try next! Currently on utogestan (100mg daily prescribed for oral use) and estrodot 75 patches. The oral progesterone gave me nausea and headaches so after researching I tried using it vaginally on alternate nights. I had 2 long bleeds and as I already have very low ferritin I upped it to nightly vaginal use. Now I have bladder irritation and BV  :'(  My previous regimes have been:
Estrogen patch and Mirena - hair fell out
Femoston 2/10 - suited me well apart from leg cramps, but had heavy painful periods (see above re low ferritin).
If anyone can offer me any advice I would be so grateful. I was under the C&W meno clinic but they discharged me and my GP has no clue. Thank you for reading this ❤

lizziejt, sorry to hear about your progesterone problems, I've been there myself.

It's a difficult one and once you reach the end of the road and have tried everything that is available, your choices are very limited.

I was considering a hysterectomy but I decided to have one final attempt to find something that worked and I came across compounded progesterone.   I found a clinic that specialises in bespoke progesterone, had a consultation and decided to give it a go.   My problems were migraine related but like you, I got to the stage where I had tried all conventional forms of progesterone and none of them worked, they all triggered migraines in my case.

Long story short, I now take 50mg progesterone every day alongside conventional oestrogen and testosterone and more than two years later, it's continuing to work very well and I'm glad I didn't opt for a hysterectomy.   I found that 100mg Utrogestan in one hit was too high a dose.

I'm on a continuous combined regime and one huge bonus for me is not having to endure the bleeds.

It's not an easy option, it's expensive and it's a last resort really but I had no choice.   You might want to consider it yourself but you may have to reduce to a slightly lower dose of oestrogen or take a slightly higher dose of progesterone if you want to continue with the 75mcg patch.

I have a thread on compounded hormones in the Alternative Therapies section on here which you might want to read.  I will bump it up for you.

One other option would be a lower dose progesterone coil like the Jaydess.  I'm surprised the C&W didn't offer this to you.

Why did the C&W discharge you?

I hope that helps.

Thanks so much Mary, that's very interesting about the compounded testosterone. I'm not sure I want to go down the private route because of the expense, but I may end up doing that if I can't find any other solution. I'll have a look at your other thread! One option i may try first is Femoston conti tablets, as I know I can tolerate dydrogesterone well. Such a shame it isn't available separately. Thanks again for your help x

Hi I am at the stage of making the decision to either stop HRT or have a Hysterectomy. I can not take Utrogestan. I get terrible Migraine which makes me vomit and lays me up in bed. I am currently on Estradot 100 and supposed to take Utrogestan 100 every other day. But I can't it just debilitating. Can you let me know the clinic that prescribed you with the 50mg Progesterone as I would like one last attempt to crack this. I'm desperate. Thank you.

Have you tried other progestins? I found Utrogestan a complete nightmare - gave me terrible anxiety, nausea, stomach ache etc. Had already tried a few synthetic progestins and the Mirena, and all gave me side effects of some sort. I'm now on Provera and finding it, if not ideal, certainly tolerable.
