Dr. Martin Scurr, Daily Mail
« on: March 09, 2021, 03:51:59 PM »

An article by this doctor, in response to someone writing in about his 75 year old wife having horrendous sweats since coming off HRT, states "It would not be advisable for your wife to start it again as HRT raises the risk of breast cancer, heart disease and blood clots." He closes the article with, "Although the hot flushes are unpleasant, the symptoms will eventually stop." Any thoughts?

It's the Daily Mail  :-X ..... I wouldn't put the paper under my chickens to roost over  ;)

I don't suppose there are references to as how old this particular article might be, nor where he/she gets his info from?

Trouble is, it's a widely read paper and the friend who showed me this article (aware of its incendiary nature) was pointing out that this section, aimed at health and women, was terribly wrong!!!! So, the "article" is current, read by impressionable/biddable folk and with no reference to his sources of information. Hmmmm......feel a letter coming on!

I'll sign it  :D

Not many papers to have references, some journalists seem to latch on to what might be 'popular' on the day without checking their sources.  Often these are way out of date  ::).

Widely read .......... how many skip the medical bits  ;)

Sadly there are many many GPs who have the same view. I have a friend who was told she had to come off HRT after 10 years. She felt absolutely terrible and was eventually allowed to take a lower dose again.

That's encouraging, Jasmine20. I was bullied (no other word for it!) off HRT about ten years ago and it was insisted upon by two gps in the same practice that I go cold turkey. It was like falling off a cliff and I haven't been the same since. Why are gps holding on to (and publishing and allowed to publish) these outdated views and values? I'm hoping to get back on systemic HRT, but have quite a battle on my hands!

It's so disheartening that very few investigations seem to have been carried out on the risks of HRT when prescribed for women over 70.

Anybody know of any? Investigations? I'm guessing many, like me at 68, prefer to consider risks but place greater weight on quality of life by now!

I doubt if there can be many such studies. Any opportunities to investigate this would have been scuppered anyway by the WHI fiasco. So many possible candidates will have had their supplies stopped in the early noughties (as some of us know to our cost 🙄).
