Ferritin levels - who knew??
« on: February 04, 2021, 01:03:47 PM »

Last June, I was told I had Labyrinthitus (tinnitus and dizziness). I had bloods taken and told they were "normal". Fine - I didn't doubt the Dr.
Then I went on to HRT for anxiety and it calmed me down however the tinnitus and dizziness remained with me for most days and at other times I was having insane tiredness.
Every month (after my period) I was feeling sedated tired. Like I had been injected with something. Horrible. It lasted for days along with the tinnitus.
Then I had bloods taken in Dec. "Normal" again.
By the time Jan arrived, I felt so weird, I asked for a print out of my blood results.

June my ferritin was 40
Dec it was 20 .........so neither of these are normal!

I also experienced a fizzy nose feeling and was told I had rhinitus. I'm sure its due to histamine?

I am now on Iron tablets and eat an iron rich diet. I had a blood test 3 days ago and my ferritin is 32. I still feel tired and dizzy but hopefully this will improve.

My meno specialist (who I saw today) has put me on 200mg of utrogestan every day to see if this will stop ovulation so I don't bleed. She also said not to use too much oestrogen so the womb lining doesn't build up too much.

The ferritin wasn't picked up!!

Anyone else in this boat?

Mine was the opposite....too high but a kind lady on here explained to me that menopause can affect ferratin levels.
When I was still having periods my levels were very low,I was tired and very breathless, I was put on ferrous sulphate tablets and they really helped.
You are right to question the results though,if it's having an impact on your day to day life

Hello Julia45

I wonder if my experience will be of interest to you.

I am post meno and about two years ago I paid to have an iron infusion. I hoped it would also help my  meno symptoms but I don't think it made any difference.

I discovered my iron status because I have twice yearly blood tests and my  Ferritin results last month were high at  208.1 ug/L with the normal range being 10.0 - 291.0. The printout that I get from my GP  includes a note from the lab confirming that all results are normal and no further action is needed.  Coincidentally I had Labyrinthitis a few months ago and I expect my Ferritin level then was the same as it is now.

Low iron leads to fatigue and breathlessness as you know and although your levels were low they would still be considered within the normal range as above. Just to be sure I suggest that you check  your results and see what ranges the lab is using and if there are any follow up comments for your GP that were overlooked.

Wishing you well.

K.
