Need to change estrogen application site
« on: January 01, 2021, 11:32:56 AM »

As paranoid as I've been about my oestrogel rubbing onto my dogs, and doing everything possible to avoid it (washing hands, covering arms, washing arms after 3 hours etc), I have just noticed they have very slightly enlarged nipples. I need to apply the oestrogel somewhere else, eg thighs, but since I have thin arms and larger thighs, I am worried about absorption. I wonder if the oestrogen will take longer to build up in my thigh tissues and will - at least initially - not enter my bloodstream so easily until it starts accumulating in my skin. I also worry about dosage overall and whether I need to increase it.  Has anyone tried going from arms to thighs, and did you use the same number of pumps? I currently use 1.5. And might anyone confirm that applying the oestrogel to sllighly more fat-covered areas results in oestrogen being released more steadily than on skinny arms? Any thoughts/ advice would be really welcome as I need to take this decision asap. Do be careful with oestrogel & physical contact with others. Happy new year to you all ❤️

Hi,
I have only just started with the patches, so no idea if they are working yet, but my doc told me to put it just in my knicker line , so I have it there.

As I said,  I don't know how unwell get on with it, so someone with more experience than me would be better placed to answer!  ;D

I also have more fat on my thighs than arns/shoulders and I haven't noticed a difference. I believe it's supposed to be taken up through fat cells so I had the opposite thought. I would try it and see, you can increase the dose if you think it isn't enough. Some dogs have had alopecia from contact with oestrogen.

I've had probs with getting good E absorption from transdermal HRT (patches) but do well with patches on the butt - the only place I really have any have fat & better than I did with patch on lower abdomen which is skinny.

I researched it some years ago, trying to find optimal site for absorption but frustratingly can't find the articles I thought I'd bookmarked.  Anyway, this one is from a study using Climara patches which found the buttock was best & so I'm assuming fatty is more effective than skinny, though we don't know how fatty the tummies of the participants were!  Imagine the same may apply to gel i.e. better absorption from a fatty site than skinny?

Hi Cassandra
I stopped using the gel for similar reasons. I was concerned about my 10 yr old accidently picking up estrogen from the gel if she cuddled me etc. I was extremely careful and washed hands thoroughly etc  used different towels to dry hands and so on. It was probably no risk but I still could not help thinking about it so decided it wasnt worth the extra stress in my life. I switched to conti patches and then had bleeding issues every two weeks. I narrowed this down to putting the patch in the wrong place ( for me). I read up on absorption and realised I needed to put it on either my thigh or bottom. Fatty areas absorb better. I was switching areas ( thigh to hip ) and the change was making me bleed. Probably because it was messing up the balance between the two hormones. I now religiously keep to thigh and just swop legs. No bleeding for 4 plus weeks now so it seems to be working for me. I am sure putting it on your inner thighs will be good for absorption. Bottom too but I find the patches fiddly to put on and so putting them on my bottom is beyond my skillset! I hope this helps  :)

Hi Sheila, thank you, that's great to hear! I tried inner thighs today & keeping fingers crossed. One of my dogs also has alopecia with a slight bald patch on his head, and I'm feeling awful about it, so I hope it's reversible. It does frighten me that the oestrogen got through despite all the precautions I took. Hopefully I've made the correction in time! Thank you for your precious advice xx

Hello & thank you for taking the time to write. I have to say I took every precaution possible (gloves, washing hands, washing arms, wearing sleeves) but it still got through, and I have teenage children & husband that (less frequently than the dogs :-D ) want to hug, so I could no longer do the arm thing. I am trying thighs as of today and if my dogs don't go back to normal in the next few months (because sadly I've been told it can take that long for the effects to be reversed) I will also be considering patches. Glad to hear thighs at the way to go... it's always good to ask those in the know because official instructions say arms... thank you xxx

Thank you All for your precious feedback. I guess thighs it is, and I feel better knowing that many opt for this part of the body as opposed to the arms.  I started today and fingers crossed it works out well & with no transferring! For anyone using the gel, I would strongly recommend using gloves because I believe that despite hand washing, some of the oestrogen is inevitably absorbed into the palm of the hands. I might also consider patches - probably a much safer option in this respect xxxx

To avoid getting the gel on your hands, you can pump it directly onto the skin and rub in with the back of a desert spoon.

I pump it directly onto my thighs, use a finger tip to rub it it then wash hands. My dogs are still hairy (a bit too hairy) .  :scottie:

Cunning, Joaniepat!

That's what I do with Testogel on thigh Sheila - but easy to do that with one finger as the amount of gel is so small.

Fingertips and spoon sound like great ideas! Sheila I'm glad to hear your pooches are still furry... mine are extremely short-haired greyhounds, not the best combination with my over-eager oestrogenous patting, and also I suppose the tiniest changes are immediately visible :-)  xxxx

I'll swap you a rough coated collie - especially when she's moulting...  ;D

It's interesting re the application site. When I rubbed it on my thighs I had poorer absorption. I'm assuming it was poorer as the sweats started back. I now rub it onto the least fatty parts, my shins and lower inner arms, that seems to work much better for me. I also now don't use my hands. I use my lower inner arms to rub it in.
