DO DRS ACTUALLY KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THE MENOPAUSE/???????????
« on: December 24, 2020, 05:08:27 PM »

I'm beginning to think the subject of the MENOPAUSE has been left out of physicians learning curriculum!
Finally got a triage appt with the Drs - she phoned me back to ask my symptoms and why I thought it was the Meno.
After I explained that I went 4 years before having any symptoms which are mainly nausea/dizziness and constipation, she responded by telling me she wasn't prepared to give me anything at all as she inferred it was down to not having a hard poo!!!
She asked if I was taking anything for the nausea etc and I told her I was taking STUGERON and her reply was thats for travel sickness and was I going anywhere nice????
I got a small box of fibre sachets from the dispensary and that was it, there is no hope is there if a female GP states menopausal symptoms dont exist and all you really need is a MAMMOTH POO!!!

I am spitting bricks!  Did she really ask with all that is going on with no travel 'anywhere nice'?

Many GPs don't believe that ladies are menopausal unless we complain of hot flushes and lack of periods.  Ask for a referral to a Meno-clinic in the New Year, have a look on-line 2 see if there are any close to you?  Not a gynaecologist !

Are U able to change your Surgery?

Whilst this doesn't surprise me at all (sadly!), I feel we owe it to ourselves to persevere in finding a gp who is available to negotiation thanks to their knowledge. This can never be a one-size-fits-all, one-sided approach. They absolutely must at least acknowledge that we are the experts on what we are uniquely experiencing and be open to navigating a course of action as a joint venture. Or, have the grace to admit they haven't the necessary expertise and be willing to refer to those who have. I'm so sorry you have met with dismissiveness.

A good point CLKD, I would advise anyone seeking help with peri and menopause issues to say they have hot flushes, whether they have or not  ;)

Thank you for your responses :O)
I'm going to increase the sachets she gave me so I can have a mammoth poo and will look to see if I can find other Drs in the area - only problem is how do I see if they have any specialists in Menopause. Not a single Dr seems to have any idea at all about it!
I dont think anyone seems to know about Meno or indeed are interested............

Ask for a referral to a menopause clinic.  Some GPs do have letters after their name as they are interested in Womens' Health.

Apparently menopause is an optional module. I had a similar experience, many symptoms but not flushes so it couldn't be meno related even though I was 56 and 57 at the time. My advice is to educate yourself as much as possible then tell the gp it's time they knew what they were talking about (can you tell bad temper was a symptom?  :o)

Hi menopausalalways, many women know nothing about menopause. I truly believe we must be the advocates of our own health, lots of good information out there, all I hope from doctors is that they're good listeners. Hope you had a wonderful Christmas time  :)
