Exercise and pulled muscles...hormone related??
« on: December 17, 2020, 06:36:36 PM »

Hi ladies,
I’ve been exercising since the first lockdown in March, starting with couch to 5k. I completed it but was plagued with constant painful knees and ankles, so I’ve stopped running and have joined Davina McCall’s ‘Own your Goals’ which is amazing!
I do a mix of weight training and aerobic/dance sessions and I absolutely love it. The only problem is I keep pulling muscles! Back in Sept when I wasn’t exercising as much due to busy work schedule I somehow managed to pull a muscle in my mid back which still niggles. Then my shoulder started hurting and is still very painful at times (neither of these to were due to exercise, I can’t think of anything that caused them!). Then 2 days ago I was doing my normal lower body workout and pulled a muscle in the side of my leg, that’s stopped hurting but this morning I did lunges and now have awful groin pain!!
I feel a bit like I’m falling apart and it’s really getting to me as exercising has been amazing for my mental health. Do you think it could be a hormonal thing? I know muscle pain is a peri symptom but this much?? Can’t think of any other reason to keep pulling muscles though. Anyone else had similar?

I always follow the warm up and cool down on the program I’m doing. Think I’m just getting old (I’m only 46 😩)!

Hi Kah,

I was constantly getting injured 5 years ago (I was 45) after I took up power walking. I was getting on great, loving it and then after 5 months I was pulling muscles, joint pain &  electric shocks in my legs etc even though my fitness was better than ever.  I was referred to rheumatology and It turns out I am completely hyper mobile (double jointed of old).  I was told I can only do exercise in water or Pilates otherwise I risk dislocations and injury.
I was a bit of a “rubber body” child, so if this sounds familiar then it’s a possibility.

:)

Hi, I’m pretty sure I’m not hyper mobile, my daughter is and she is bendy in all sorts of weird ways! I on the other hand am the most unbendy person there is!

I feel there’s a link between lower oestrogen and muscle soreness. I am a runner and at certain times I can feel like I’ve OD’d at the gym just after a gentle 5k, particularly in the inner thigh area.

Yes, I've had this too, pulling muscles when there really was no reason for it. The cure for me was testosterone. I had sore hips which went when I took hrt but it didn't do anything for the muscle problem.

I’ve heard that somewhere else too. So the testosterone helped the muscles?

Yes. My problem was pulling muscles rather than muscle weakness. An unexpected bonus was that I could stop doing pelvic floor exercises too so I assume it has improved muscle tone. How is your libido? It's usually a sign of lack of testosterone (and the only reason they will prescribe it), mine was zero. You usually have to be stable on hrt first and more it usually needs a referral to a meno clinic as GPS don't normally prescribe it.

Thanks. I can’t take HRT as I had breast cancer and am on tamoxifen. After reading up on turmeric supplements I thought I might have found the answer but turns out you can’t take that when on tamoxifen either ☹️ Even since posting this the other day my neck has gone stiff and my hip has started hurting. I dread waking up to find out what is now hurting 😩

I wonder if either your cancer specialist or a meno clinic could help? It's difficult when you have a problem that crosses specialisms as it's rare to find someone who knows about both. I believe the reason your oestrogen levels need to be stable is because testosterone can be converted but I'm not sure what to and if it will interfere with your bc or medication. Sorry I don't have the answer but I hope you can find something to help. Are there any bc forums that could help? There must be others with the same problem.

We use turmeric in Indian cookery.  My Oncologist never suggested that I leave out anything from my diet.  On statins which apparently 1 shouldn't eat grapefruit with: guess what, I love grapefruit  ::)
