MRI Scan of Uterus - so worried
« on: December 01, 2020, 01:14:42 PM »

I recently had an unexpected bleed on HRT - I'm convinced it was hormonal because I didn't take my medication properly. My Gynae thought so too.

So I was sent for a womb scan which revealed:
1) 2 very large fibroids
2) a small cyst on ovary
3) gallstones

I am otherwise in very good health but all this has worried me, particularly as I have been called for an MRI in a couple of days - but the consultant has not yet spoken to me so I don't know what they are looking for.

I'm an a mild state of hysteria - wondering if it's really serious. Having said that, they are not asking for a biopsy...yet.

When I feel so well and have no sinister symptoms, is it possible to be seriously ill?

Has anyone else had and MRI and what happened?

Thank you in advance - Red Fox

Hi Red Fox,

I have yearly MRIs for other reasons and I have a fibroid that's 20mm. You don't feel anything with the MRI  - I have a contrast on an IV to show up my abdomen and pelvis but I'm not sure you have that with just pelvis area. Its weird  - you lie in the tube and its noisy but you have headphones on - and they can hear you. You just have to stay still. Try not to worry about having it done.

I had a fibroid and a cyst, with no symptoms. They’ll remove them under a routine hysteroscopy in the future I expect. Cysts are very common and fibroids can be removed.
MRIs aren’t particularly pleasant but not painful at all. You’ll be ok I promise. X

Thank you Birdy - your response is very kind and helpful. So much appreciated xx

If your fibroids are really big then they would cause a bleed whether you're on hrt or not, they can remove them but they can come back,I opted for a partial hysterectomy in the end. Please dont worry (says me) it all sounds par for the course

Thank you - I think it was just to find where one of them originates from - I guess that's to find out what is to be done with them.

hello!  I have MRI scans of my pancreas alternate years, due to a strong family history of pancreatic cancer.  it's a bit noisy and you might feel slightly claustrophobic, but it's a non invasive test and very detailed.  they can spot something that's very small (which I why I don't need them annually).  you can request a tranquiliser (such as valium) if you are very nervous, but be aware that you'll need someone to escort you home if you do that, and you'll need to advise them in advance.

you'll be given instructions as when to breath normally, and when to hold your breath etc, which does give you something to concentrate on.

I hope that helps  :)

Hi Redfox
I think maybe the scan shows the size of the fibroids but not so clearly where or how they are attached. Some grow within the wall of the uterus, some are attached just by a thin stalk.  Treatment would probably differ depending what type you have and MRI would give a much clearer picture.  I have a couple of stalked ones on the outside of my uterus, I can feel one of them through the wall of my vagina (TMI)? but no treatment needed. Good to get it checked, and don't worry about the MRI, it's no biggie.
