« on: February 16, 2021, 08:44:04 PM »

I am having the mirena coil removed on Monday and starting Utrogestron
Has anyone got any tips on the best time to take it and should it be with or without food. I am starting on 100mg continuous regime

Hi Flan747

What oestrogen dose are you on and do you know if you are post-menopausal or not?

The recommendation for utrogestan is that it should be taken on an empty stomach or something like 2 hours after a meal so most women take it at bedtime I think. The reason is that bioabsorption is increased when taken with food, and maybe more the point that if you took it after variable amounts of food you might not get a consistent dose which could lead to variation in prog levels and therefore breakthrough bleeding.

Many women take it vaginally because more of the prog goes directly to the uterus to work on and protect the lining. However if you are taking it continuously you probably wouldn't want to do this?

Hope this helps and good luck with your new regime :)

Thank you so much Hurdity
I have the coil so haven’t had periods but was regular when I started HRT in June 2019 so who knows ! The specialist believes I need more progesterone and as the coil is Progestin feels I would benefit more ? Willing to give it a good go as I do with all regimes that I have tried. Since changing my diet things have definitely improved so hoping this next step takes me somewhere back to normality
Vaginally would probably work better but no wouldn’t want to do it nightly so again will see how that goes orally

hi Flan

Just wanted to say I take Utrogestan orally, and have no problems with it.  At my recent scan my lining was 1.3mm so its doing a pretty good job (im on 4 pumps of oestrogel and testosterone too).  Its a case of try it and see, some women struggle

Why does she think you need more progesterone? Just wondering as the mirena has more than you need for hrt as it's designed as a contraceptive.

The mirena is synthetic and maybe causing some of the imbalances. I need progesterone which should balance better with the Sandrena that’s the plan and I have a lot of faith as feeling better in last 3 months than I have in 18months! Fingers crossed it works ?

Hiya - Louise Newson says you can take 100mg Utrogestan vaginally every other night because more of it is absorbed where it needs to be that way.

This link is to a great talk she gave on instagram and youtube and she says the above: https://youtu.be/uC3RdxAgm-k

I started on 100mg per day orally, continuously and it was making me very sleepy and a bit zombie-fied in the day so I switched to vaginally every other night and it seems to be ok. I did phone my GP to tell her I wanted to do this, and she ok'd it with the proviso that I'm seeing a Meno specialist (on the NHS) in a couple of months.

Hope that helps.

That does help thank you! That would be a better option if it didn’t work out orally! So nice to hear positive stories thank you everyone x

So I have had the mirena coil removed and my GP says I have to take either 200mg days 15-26 or 100mg days 1-25 to ensure a bleed
as 100mg daily will cause a build up and possibly cause cancerous cells???? No idea what to do now I know alt of ladies take it differently but would I be wrong to go against GPS advice?

Ok thanks for that info! I’m going to try with 100mg daily orally and see how that goes ! Rocky road ahead probably! That’s the way it usually goes 😄
