Oestrogel not working??
« on: November 28, 2020, 08:14:05 PM »

Hi I am 53 and five weeks post op, had total hysterectomy due to fibroids and thickening of the endometrium, I was prescribed oestrogel by private menopause doctor, started taking two pumps day after op for three weeks but didn’t notice any change, hot sweats, night sweats, tiredness, sleepless nights, I then increased to four pumps as recommended by the doctor but still no change, had another consultation today over phone due to COVID and was told to persevere for another couple of months as was still early days and can take up to three months to feel full benefits, she did say I could use one more pump in a months time if needed, she told me I should be seeing the hot sweats decreasing by now, was also told I may need testosterone in the future, has anybody else not found a difference by using oestrogel?
Many thanks
Jools xx

Some people don't absorb it very well. You may find a patch, oral or implant suit you better. Flushes usually only take a week or two to go which would indicate you aren't absorbing it well. I was told I could go up to 6 pumps though I haven't needed more than 4. Would they test your levels? Yes, you may well need testosterone but they like you oestrogen to be stable first. Any underlying health conditions that might interfere with it?

Sheila thankyou for your reply, I decided on gel due to been low risk compared to tablets but was told I could try the patch if gel doesn’t agree with me, I was told I could use six pumps too, three am and three pm ( I forgot to mention it in my above post) so will start that from tomorrow, if no difference in two months will change to the patch, to be honest I’m trying to avoid testosterone if possible albeit the side affects are minimal but it’s quite expensive to buy and blood tests are only done by private clinics or menopause specialists which come at a cost, the only other medication I take is thyroxine due to under active thyroid but have regular blood tests to monitor this xx

Try a forum search, I think there's been a post about thyroid medication with hrt. I can't really remember but there may be timing issues. If you're in the UK you can get testosterone on the nhs but you will need a referral to an NHS menopause clinic to get it and then only for low libido.
