Help and advice please: Utrogestan.
« on: September 03, 2020, 04:05:57 PM »

HRT week 3: gel and utrogestan. So this is day 6 of 100 mg of Utrogestan (cyclical for 12 days) being inserted vaginally  rather than taken orally. Very fatigued/tired all day. Feels like I’ve been sedated. I’m wondering if it is more potent because I’m inserting it? It’s really getting me down now as Oestrogen has been good. Phoned Dr and Pharmacist who said try taking it orally, 200mg, as prescribed as inserted vaginally can cause drowsiness.
I’m wondering whether to miss a dose tonight to see if it actually is the Utrogestan making me drowsy. Frustrated (and tired). Can I miss a dose for one night?

Don't miss a night - it will upset the system and potentially cause breakthrough bleeding. Changing to taking it orally during one cycle may also have the same effect but do take the whole course. Vaginal use is actually recommended as an alternative if there are too many side effects from oral use so it can have the opposite effect! There are more metabolic by-products after oral intake than vaginal but it may be that in your case more has been absorbed systemically? You won't know unless you try.

After you have finished the course and got throught the withdrawal and bleed you should then feel energised for at least a week or two until you need to start taking the utrogestan again. Keep a diary!

Thanks for your reply...I’ve just taken my blood pressure and it’s slightly raised at 124/74...my usual is 112/65 ish.
Will it do me massive harm to miss one night of Utrogestan? I just want to see if it’s the tablet causing the side effect of exhaustion and see if it’s raising my BP. Really anxious about this.
So maybe, taking it orally would help?

It won’t do massive harm but won’t help with the continuity of your regime and you may get some bleeding due to progesterone withdrawal. Like Hurdity says it’s best to persevere to the end of the course if you can.  Taking it orally is worse re side effects I have always found taking it vaginally definitely easier.

A couple of tips re using utrogestan vaginally:

1) use ovestin just before (I insert it teatime) before the utrogestan at bedtime. This helps prevent a sore bladder + having to get up to wee in the night.

2) don’t drink alcohol.  Utrogestan and alcohol just don’t mix so I always abstain when I’m on that phase of my hrt.

It is sedative and it will make you tired but the above couple of tips really help. The other thing would be to take it for the minimum time your specialist is happy with.

Wishing you well x

Thanks so much for this. I literally feel sedated and weird all day after taking it vaginally. Did your BP go up? It might be because I’m anxious about taking it. I just feel drained. I’m taking 100mg, vaginally...the oral use tablets.

No I don’t think my blood pressure went up but then mine has always been on the low side anyway. I think you’ve correctly diagnosed yourself when you say you’re anxious when taking it. Try to relax and like Birdy says take it at night, it’s like knock out drops I always really sleep well on it x

Thanks for this. I’m tired into the evening though. That’s the problem. Can hardly lift my head. It could be because I have Labyrinthitis and just gone back to work?

I was taking 100mg vaginally but should be taking 200mg orally. Too worried to take orally

It was the same for me. I couldn't stay awake on the daily oral dose, so I switched to vaginally on alternate nights. This turned out to be just as sedating.

Maybe another progesterone would suit you better?
