No testosterone
« on: June 22, 2020, 11:42:12 AM »

Spoke with GP this morning about testosterone.. she wasn't sure and said she'd look into it. Anyway picked my script up and it's not on it.  Where do I go from here. It was my last hope to make me feel better.

Generally GP's cannot prescribe testosterone to women. Your GP needs to refer you to a menopause specialist or a gynaecologist, you'll also need to have blood test to find out your levels of testosterone in your body. If they prescribe it you will go back regularly for check ups with blood tests to keep an eye on levels.

If you have an enlightened GP, especially one with gynae specialism then you can get it prescribed locally on NHS as I do, but as YorkshireGirl says you should have follow up blood tests of T as well as SHBG (look up if not familiar!). However when I first had it prescribed it was from a specialist 5 years ago although my GP will prescribe it anyway. If your GP won't then yes ask for a referral and you should not need to pay. Unfortunaely there are no guarantees with products prescribed off-licence.

Thanks everyone
Had a blood test but only
One hospital in the north west tests female testosterone apparently.. I mentioned it to the nurse and she sent it to the wrong hospital and it wasn't tested. So I'm back to square one 🥴

Ask for a referral to a menopause clinic. I haven't had a blood test, it was prescribed on the the basis of low (absent!) libido.

I was referred to the menopause clinic at John Radcliffe hospital in Oxford and I was refused testosterone as I was over 55 and a lack of libido was not a good enough reason to prescribe it. Under 50 they said they would have prescribed it.

Try a different one. I was prescribed it at 58 at Stepping Hill, Stockport.

It was difficult enough getting referred in the first place so I don't think I'd get referred again plus I'm not really bothered about libido any more (Can't believe I'm like that now!) They also wanted me to stop HRT at 60 though that was five years ago now. I wish that all NHS menopause clinics would give the same advice - obviously that testosterone is fine along with HRT over 60  ;D

I wish there were more Menopause clinics! I had to travel a 100 mile round trip to see someone. Gps just are not set up to handle complicated menopause issues like VA.

Hi Sheila99 my GP was willing to prescribe it. Spoke to consultant and he was fine providing I had levels checked.  It’s getting the bloods done that’s the problem. Stepping hill and wythenshawe wouldn’t test the blood. Obviously with the situation as it is I’ve not got the  continuity with the docs. I was looking through old blood tests and blow me I had it privately tested two years ago!! It was 0.9. I’ve emailed the surgery to pass this info on and for the doc to ring me... hopefully she will 😕

I wasn't tested, they prescribed it on symptoms. They haven't suggested testing since. Good that your gp will prescribe it, it's probably easier and quicker to get it done yourself than wait for a meno appointment. Hope it works for you.

I have just been prescribed it by Birmingham womens hospital over a telephone appointment. They never mentioned any blood tests though. I have no libido but am just desperate to try anything that might help after 18 months of hell. My sex drive before meno was sky high btw but hoping it might help with my mood.
