Some info ladies please
Yesterday evening there was a bird of prey sitting on the roof of a neighbours shed, which is odd as I've never seen one settle here in 7 years then this morning when I opened the curtains it was in the goats paddock, not trying to hurt them or anything,it jumped up onto their fence as I must have startled it,we have red kites here but I can't tell if it's one of them or not,it may be that it's a young kite but I'm just a bit concerned that it's poorly or hungry, went onto the RSPB website but pretty useless for what I wanted, should I put out some meat for it?

NOPE!  Nature.  It may be a kite or buzzard that is moulting which will affect the ability to fly, though usually they roost.  As scavenges, both will go to the ground after worms, beetles etc.,, their main food source.  Is there a ring on a leg?

A watch and wait policy is best.  Run out and give it a 'shoo' 2 find out if it's holding a wing that won't flap .  This causes birds to hop round in circles.  In the mean time, look up raptor rescue rather than the RSPB or RSPCA.  If U can, take some video to get an idea of the problem?

It may be that there are bugs as you have goats which will pass poo = flies and/or beetles ;-).

How high was the neighbours shed Jaypo? Did it fly there? I'd advise against putting out raw meat for it unless you are sure it is injured. Could you describe it more so we may be able to work out what it is? Around here buzzards tend to sit on fences more than the kites do.

If it is a kite there is a fact sheet on Tiggywinkles site and an emergency helpline number I think.

Taz  :)

Thanks clkd, I watched it as it came back and sat on the fence again,so I shooed it and it flew into a nearby tree but it was flying low,I've just never seen them stick around so close.

Oops, you just posted a second before me Taz,it is flying but it does look like one of it's wings is flopping a bit,The kites here are always going about but usually soaring high, I did get a picture but it's a bit grainy

It's probably moulting.  They look really scruffy at this time of year.  They all feed on the ground - beetles, slugs, worms ............. whereas kestrels will hover B4 they see rodents in the grass :-))).  Nature needs to be left to do it's stuff to keep populations/food availability even.

Does it remain hanging around, could it B  a youngster driven away from the family area to fend 4 itself?

I emailed that raptor rescue and they said it is a common buzzard, going by the photo,it will hang about for a few days then probably move on because the kites are predominant in the area,it will survive on ground insects if it has to but if I see it constantly on the ground all puffed up I've to phone them and they will come for it  :)

Can’t feed the birds now.  It’s destroying their balance.
