Testosterone for weight loss
« on: May 11, 2020, 02:09:58 PM »

Hi all.

I'm 54 and haven't had a period for five years. I've had no hot flushes or anything but  my mudrif is fat!! I did try an estrogen gel once for a couple of days but had a really sore stomach with it so I stopped.

From what I can gather, bhrt contains testosterone? I'm interested in this because I think it might help with my fat midsection.

Is this correct and if so, where can I get it please?

Thankyou.

Hi!  a lack of oestrogen can cause muscles to become lax = aches and pains as well as Middle Age Spread.  Have you put on weight?

Thanks for the welcome and the reply. I've read do many conflicting things about hrt. Weight gain being one of them. I just thought bhrt was better because it has testosterone in it?

Yes I've put on two stone and most of it is around my gut. I've just stared eating healthily and doing yoga and have lost 4lbs this week but I could do with some Testo to move things along.

Will it though?  If you lose weight naturally you may well keep it off. Have you looked at Waitrose - I don't mean that do I  :-\ try weight watchers  ;D ? which will give you meal plans.  What's your weakness ........... mine is still chocolate  8), cream crackers with butter, roasted veg. in all shapes and form ........

As you're 5 years post meno and have no meno symptoms I'm not sure anyone would prescribe it. I'm on HRT and testosterone and the only way I can lose weight is by eating less. Sorry, I know it isn't what you want to hear  :(.

Join the club, i have put over a stone on since last summer,  which ,might not seem a lot, but at only just under 5ft  can't afford extra weight,no idea why,i don't eat a lot .but i'm not as active as i used to be,as i had my little dog whom i lost last August, so of course i took her for walks,
I wondered if livial put weight on, as i have heard it does, but it didn't straight away, but as i said i was more active, and since this lockdown not moving as much either

Mine is midriff too, and i have never had fat round my stomach before,in fact never weighed as much as this ever

Sorry, never got a notification.

Oh, ok, I just thought Testo helps. No one knows if bhrt contains testo? Ok, think I'll research more. I've heard of someone called professor Stubbs. Think will look at his website.

Thanks for replies.

I'm on T and it hasn't had any effect on my weight either way. I find Progesterone does it blows me up, and I think Oestrogen does, I put 9lbs on when I first started hrt -  but not T no effects weight wise at all x

Hi Krista65

 :welcomemm:

Firstly here is some info about weight gain and menopause from this website:
https://www.menopausematters.co.uk/weightgain.php

Also not sure where you got the idea that T would help you lose weight especially around the middle because it is relative testosterone dominance around the time of menopause which causes women to change their shape from pear to apple (ie weight around the middle).

Oestrogen decreases rapidly following the last period, especially over the next two to three years, whereas testosterone levels fall gradually - hence we become out of balance and some androgenic features can come to the fore ie weight gain around middle, hair growth in the wrong place, sometimes slightly deeper voices etc.

If T is replaced for other reasons, primarily libido, then it is very important that oestrogen is replaced too and is at healthy levels before T is added otherwise it could exacerbate these issues. T replacement can help build muscle after exercise but not if you don't exercise much I doubt and still, any extra fat will be laid down around the middle.

Most women need to exercise more and eat less in order to even stay the same weight after menopause, as you will see from the article, due to metabolic slowdown.

As for BHRT. There was a discussion about this on another thread recently. It depends what you are talking about. If you mean compounded bioidentical hormone therapy (cBHRT) this is not endorsed by the medical profession nor this website (run by a leading NHS gynaecologist) and the basis of it is flawed ie that you can tailor hormone doses to your actual levels according to the results of blood tests.  Don't be misled by all the stuff on the internet about this. The idea came from US where they have different healthcare system and has to a small extent spread over here. It's a bit of a con and a marketing ploy.

Here is a statement about it by the British Menopause Society which also explains the difference between this  cBHRT and regulated BHRT (rBHRT) which is what most of us take if we want to use ?natural? ie bio-identical hormones, available on NHS https://thebms.org.uk/publications/consensus-statements/bioidentical-hrt/  Yes some of the unregulated compounded creams, lozenges and such like do include T but not all but you will pay per nasum for it!

Regarding John Studd. This is a different altogether. He is a private practitioner ( also expensive) who prescribes rBHRT ie the proper regulated stuff so if you are going to go privately and can afford it then he (his clinic: not sure if he still practices as he's getting on a bit now)  does prescribe testosterone, although only along with other HRT. There are other private clinics that also provide T but cheaper and better still many NHS menopause clinics now prescribe it ( since the 2015 NICE Guildeines made provision for it for low libido, using products currently available for men but at lower doses).

I get it on NHS from my local ( but gynae specialist) GP but 5 years ago had it prexcribed privately because then that was the only way.

Good luck :)

Hurdity, thanks again. I have read through the links you posted and am clearer now. So, basically, I feel ok in myself. Would you say I don't need hrt then?

Also, not sure if anyone knows this but apparently vitamin D and calcium are good for fat loss..I started taking D a week or so ago and I'm not as obsessed with food. So I Googled it and sure enough there's all this information about it. Too early for me to say definitively but worth a try especially with Covid going around. That's why I started taking it.

Hi krista - it's not a question of need as such especially at your age as you are past the average age of menopause, but any years taking hRT benefits heart and bones for the years you are taking it and delays the inevitable decline in oestrogen. If you don't have any symptoms then there is less impetus to decide to take it which is what led most of us to go down this route, but if you were only thinking about fat then no. Exercise, good diet etc is far better although maybe some oestrogen replacement will slightly alter the fat redistribution to be more around the hips. I've been taking HRT for 13 years and I haven't noticed that! Still bigger round the midriff even though figure is fine elsewhere!

Better to get out in the sun for vit D and especially at this time of year no supplements should be needed, but if you are of darker skin or staying in due to CV-19 then supplements are definitely in order as no-one should allow themselves to become deficient. I don't take it for example for most of the year although glug the odd spoonful of cod liver oil over winter even though I do eat plenty of vit D rich foods.

All the best

Thankyou Hurdity. I've decided I'm not going to take it and just concentrate on eating healthier and exercising. Xx

VitD and calcium are part of our make up, don't know if they account for weight loss.  It's what we puts in our gobs that puts weight on ;-).  As we age metabolism may slow down so we need to eat less, exercise more [note to self  :o].

DH has lost 20lb since 5th January by not eating between meals other than fruit, cutting out alcohol completely and exercising more.  His gut gurgles alarming at times  :o  :-X but his belly has gone.  He won't admit to being hungry  ;)
