Migraines: estrogel?
« on: April 20, 2020, 01:30:54 PM »

Hi ladies I'm Jo I'm new to the forum. I've been on oestrogel and uterogestan and androfeme for 2 years and always had migraines but now they are becoming ridiculous I get one every other day, I'm feeling sick and dizzy too. Due to bad anxiety my dr (Harley Street) upped the estrogel to 3-4 pumps so I wonder if it's that? My estrogen she said is in the 800s now which I'm told is high. it's a catch 22.. anxiety or migraine I really don't know what to do. Btw I'm still in Peri but I'm on daily uterogestan 100mg a night.

Hi maybe put the product names into the search box here: makes notes?  Were you OK apart from anxiety B4 you upped the dose?

Babibell, I'm really sorry to hear about your migraines, I'm a fellow sufferer so I sympathise.

You say you have always had migraines, do you know if they are hormone related?   Were they usually before a period pre menopause?

Generally speaking, migraine with aura is due to oestrogen spikes whereas migraine without aura is due to progesterone intolerance and/or progesterone withdrawal.   Either way, hormonal migraines are due to unstable hormones so it is always best to aim for a stable, continuous form of HRT if possible.

How do you find Utrogestan?   Has it made your migraines worse?  Sometimes migraineurs do better with a Mirena or Jaydess coil.

I started getting silent migraines (migraine aura without headache) when I reached menopause.   My migraines are caused by oestrogen spikes due to lack of my own produced progesterone which was protecting me from migraines during my reproductive years.  Progesterone goes west early on in the menopause process which is when I hit the buffers.   Unfortunately Utrogestan just caused more hormone instability in my case and the Mirena coil is synthetic and didn't help in my particular (and unusual) case.

It's important to establish your migraine trigger before deciding on the best form of HRT.  Have you ever tried having a spell on oestrogen only to see if the migraines decrease?

Ooh no I not tried oestrogel alone as was a bit scared to. I did have pre menstrual migraines yes, but now they all month long! I do think I have an aura..well my vision is weird. I used to have a uterogestan break and I'd get one then so now she said don't break at all, I still bleed though. it's such a shame if it's the estrogel as it's much improved my mood and anxiety..it's made me my old rational self.

Hi  :)
I tried on one of the ladies suggestions using utrogestan vaginally and I did get less migraines..but now I have a bladder infection and been up weeing all night for nights on end  :(ready I think to come off the hrt I think the problem is utrogestan even though I get aura migraines as well as non aura. I love oestrogel and it's helped my anxiety so I'm gutted to be honest. Never fancied a coil..they freak me out  ;D

I feel for you - migraines are so tricky (and the sickness and dizziness and vomiting and other related symptoms, too) and I found that using Estrogel made everything worse in these respects. I found there was lessening of anxiety and some other benefits but essentially, I couldn't tolerate this gel, even at lower doses. Terrible water retention, too.
Evorel patches were OK re migraines and in being tolerable in general and for ease of use - and now I'm trying Lenzetto spray but not 100% sure yet how my migraines will fare but it's very easy to use so I?ll see over time?
What other meds have you tried for your migraines?

Hi, sorry to jump on as this is not migraine related but I see you mentioned water retention on oestrogel, this was terrible for me too.
I now use estrodot but am still finding a degree of water retention, my question is did you find this improved on evorel?

I don't typically have water retention with Evorel patches. I always found them the easiest ones to use But I do tend to find something missing with these Evorel patches.
Estradot caused awful water retention for me - I began with 100mcg patches (I switched from Evorel 75mcg to Estradot 100mcg as my menopause specialist said my levels were still on the low side and she advised going up to 100mcg) but they didn't suit me so I tried lower doses and I still had bad water retention.
I eliminated it all over @24 hours after I stopped using them and I couldn't leave the house!!!

I do prefer overall the effects of the estradiol spray these days and although I have still been using Evorel in between as I have several patches left, I think I'll stop using them. I have come to the realisation that for me, there were some specific downsides to them, primarily how they seem to affect my mood.
I have been able to assess this with all those months using the spay and feeling better in myself - and then going back to Evorel at various times.
But I do have more noticeable water retention with the spray, albeit nothing like I had with Estrogel or Estradot!
I don't know if the lowest dose of Estradot would work at all but it's probably not worth me trying at present.
I am looking to lower my dose of estradiol, though - being post-menopausal I would like to have some estradiol flowing through my system but I don't feel the need for anything but the lowest amount.
With the spray, I use one spray daily so that is the lowest I can go with that one!
