Tiger tests positive for C-19 - Bronx, US
« on: April 06, 2020, 08:12:45 AM »

Now that will put the cat amongst the pigeons ....... a long article but 1 wonders how close to a big cat once needs to get in order to infect it from a keeper not showing signs  :-\ or did he pat the tiger ........... sneeze, cough .......... if the keeper got that close he/she is probably TOO close?

In the days when they were trying to pretend it wasn't happening they said you needed 15 minutes of close contact. Perhaps the keeper was called Dinner  ;)

It has already been known that a few pets have tested positive for the virus. See this news article in the journal nature here: https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-020-00984-8

"With the coronavirus spreading rapidly around the world, some have raised concerns about whether it can pass between pets and people. So far, there have been a few reports of pets being infected: a cat in Belgium and two dogs in Hong Kong. "

There are likely to be more that have not been tested since this is not the priority at the moment.

The observations were followed up by a lab study with cats  :o , best to read it to get the lowdown.

"Previous studies of SARS-CoV, the related coronavirus that causes severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), showed2 that cats can be infected and pass it on to other cats. But 'there was no indication during the SARS pandemic that SARS-CoV became widespread in house cats or was transmitted from cats to humans?, says Saif.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that people with COVID-19 limit contact with their pets, including avoiding stroking them, being licked and sharing food.

?These are precautionary as would be advised for any new emerging disease where only limited information is available,?

It was on the BBC News earlier today.  I have to say that I am shocked.  [Tiger tiger burning bright?]. It developed a cough, now big cats cough to communicate across vast areas so the keepers obviously heard that this was different.  So tests were done.   I need to know how close is too close ...... no social distancing there then!

I remember reading reports from China in early March about pet dogs being taken to be euthanised because someone had said there was a risk of them catching the virus  :'(   >:(

This is scaremongering, even if animals test positive for it there are no reports of it being passed back to humans, vets have said there is no proof it can pass back to humans
I know someone who has a cat rescue and cats have been dumped and threatened to be put to sleep,
Also anlmals have their own form of coronavirus and can be vaccinated against it
Also with the human form of it,vets say it can get onto their fur but wouldn't stay very long,so best not to pet animals that have been in contact with a carrier of coronavirus, but unlikely to get it from an animal

Ummm... isn't this how it's supposed to have started? Though from wild animals (bat or pangolin?) not domestic ones.

I don't think many of us are likely to catch the virus from tigers.
