I know utrogestan is the gold standard for progesterone but I struggle with it so I am considering trying the Mirena.  Does anyone know if it increases the incidence of breast cancer when used as part of HRT?

Hi Rosepetal. The studies on this seem to be mixed so it's difficult to get a complete answer to your question. The Mirena is definitely not advised if you have had a hormone-related cancer though. There is a small risk with all progesterone I believe but I feel that overall lifestyle and health also plays a big part.

I have a Mirena as i just could not get on with Utrogestan, i did try to find info out on BC risk but doesn't seem alot out there or i didn't understand it!  I just can't cope without using systemic HRT so have decided quality of life is what i am going with for now. I may give Utrogestan a go again in future, but as it gave me such awful side affects i think i will wait until i am no longer at work or have to ferry teens around in the car.

I am currently researching the Mirena coil as my specialist has suggested this as an option. She would like to try me on a no bleed regime and that would mean Utrogestron daily which I must admit am not keen on. I use to vaginally and am not happy to use it daily that way so this would mean orally hence the research into the coil
