Phrases and words that we take for granted
« on: March 02, 2020, 09:07:41 PM »

Hoover - every household has one but is it always a 'hoover' ?

Catch22 - what did we say prior to the book?

Par for the Course?  Presumably related to golf .........  :-\

Never owned an actual Hoover, but I Hoover every day (almost)  ;D

I heard a phrase last week I hadn't heard since I was a child, when I told my better half, he said he'd never hear it before. Do you know what "double dog dare" means  ;D

The "hoover" thing comes from the fact that Hoover were the brand making mechanical carpet sweepers!
So therefore when other brands made a similar machine the article itself, regardless of brand was still referred to as a "hoover" because Hoover were the first company to make such a thing.

nope two hoots - not a notion on a "double dog dare"???

Ohhhh I thought it was a common saying, apparently not  ;D

If you dare someone to do something they can back out, but if you double dog dare them well the stakes are raised  ;D for example when I was in school if you were double dog dared to tell a boy you fancied him ...... It had to be done  ::)
