Boils

Hey all - newbie alert :) I have been on HRT since January 2018 after having a total hysterectomy. I take estradiol patched 75mg. I am finding it ok tho sometimes I wonder if I am better just putting up with things as some of the side effects are really unpleasant. This last few months I have been getting boils on my groin in the creases of my legs. They have been mostly manageable but this last couple of days I have got one and it hurts so much even sitting down is uncomfortable - can anyone offer any advice on how best to manage and if indeed they are anything to do with menopause or if they are just hair follicle things.

I suffer bouts of them and have always have, one in armpit at moment. You should get your blood checked for high glucose if you get them frequently as that can be a sign of raised sugar levels, although mine are always fine. You need to wash towels, flannels on a hot wash if you suffer with them.

Boil everything that can be boiled and keep it for you, don't share.

Hot water poultice.  Cooled boiled water with a good dollop of salt. Hold a soaked flannel or cotton cloth into the water, wring out and apply to the affected area.  Pat dry.  If boil bursts, wipe from inner to outer edge of area.  Keep to the air as often as possible.

Thank you Tinkerbell and CLKD for your advice. I will mention to GP next time I am there to check glucose levels. I already keep everything to myself - bit OCD like that but did not think about the salt thing so I will give that a try. Kinda wish it would burst as it would probably stop hurting so bad.. Not brave enough to pop it tho and beside it is just a big hurty red lump right now so nothing to pop :/ Thanks again :)

It may recede if it doesn't get a 'head' on it.  Wait and watch ;-)

Hi Jules2017
I have the same thing and was referred by my Doctor to a specialist only last week as I'd had them for a few months and ABs couldn't get rid of them.  The Doctor had thought they were cysts and needed removing, turns out they are HIDRADENITIS SUPPURATIVA - see link below from British Association of Dermatologists.  More common in women, and highly affected by hormones . . . . . they will only consider removal in extreme cases as the amount of skin that needs removing means plastic surgery and grafts to make good.  I decided I'd rather have the discomfort (and boy, they can hurt) rather than knock Sandrena, Vagifem and Tostran on the head.  Mine did eventually go down (took nearly three months) but I was told they are likely to come back.

Wow, good article, explains a lot for me. I've had them for years off and on, and one good doctor prescribed the chlorhexidine wash and that several times a day helps to reduce the "revival" of the infected area. Other than that regular hot baths. Mine has always been hormone related, worse just before periods, but now can be rather random. Never realised that there were other treatment possibilities, although same doctor gave a general low dose antibiotic and that did keep it at bay for several years...And oh yes, they hurt!

Hi Ladies

I suffer from horrific boils mainly in my groin and lady bits. Sometimes I can hardly sit down. Or need to wear a pad when they burst.
They are hormonal as I suffered when i was a teenager. I'd rather put up with them though than stop HRT!
Best advice I can give is always wear cotton underwear and steer clear of tights!
