Utrogestan vaginally?
« on: January 08, 2020, 04:12:52 PM »

I'm currently trying utrogestan alongside oestrogel, with view that if it suits me, I'll have my mirena removed (had it 4 years)

I've been taking it orally for 4 weeks, a bit of a browny discharge today 😟....but lots seems to recommend using it vaginally?

I'm feeling very foggy headed, forgetful, and quite low mood since being on the utrogestan, so wondering whether to try it vaginally?...I'm worried it might cause a VA flare up and potentially aggravate my bladder, but I'm also wanting to know if it's ok to use with my estring in, and every night? As I'm on a conti HRT regime, and been taking utrogestan 100mg nightly.

Thank you in advance 😊

Hi Ljp,
I can't answer all of your questions but just to say I am on continuous 100mg utrogestan, along with 100mg Estradot patch. I have tried taking the Utrogestan both orally and vaginally. Orally made me groggy, sedated, forgetful and flat mood. I have been taking it vaginally now for six months and all of those symptoms have gone. When I first started using it vaginally at night, I thought it was making me get up to pee more during the night, but this is no longer the case (might depend on how high you put it).  I use the Utrogestan vaginally every night, it has not caused a VA flare up. I use Vagifem in the morning for VA. Hopefully someone will come along re your question on the Estring.  Hope you manage to get things sorted.

p.s. I should add I also use a blob of Testogel daily, which helps with clarity and energy amongst other things.

Hi Ljp - I have only ever used it vaginally (on a cycle) and it does irritate my bladder (I always have to get up in the night once sometimes twice) and tends to cause a bit of upper labial itching as it oozes out. I don't know about the Estring - not sure what effect oestrogen and progesterone have when sloshing around together in the vagina?! I don't think this has been studied (?) although I think I remember reading that someone else is doing this? Yes it (Utro) gives me foggy head and morning exhaustion ( even more than usual) - probably less so on 100 mg than 200 mg the licensed cyclical dose.

Thank you cherry b (I have sent pm) and Hurdity.....my question regarding trying it vaginally , is whether the effects of utrogestan will be reduced if it's inserted alongside my estring, and if the effects of estring would be affected by either having utrogestan alongside it...OR....by removing it at night, and replacing it in the morning?

I'm feel more and more inclined to just stop the utrogestan, I'm seeing gynae on Tuesday for follow up, been using the utrogestan orally for 4 weeks.....I flew at my husband this morning 😥 I'd not long opened my eyes and feeling so groggy and emotional, and I'm feeling awful about it........ feel like just asking for another mirena, but I know I'll have the same dilemma in another 4/5 years when I'll be 60, as can't have coils for the rest of my life.

I'm sorry fi4 ranting, I feeling so desperate and out of control of my thoughts and emotions, work has been a nightmare this week, and people keep asking if I'm ok, so it's obviously showing that I'm not how I was before starting this 😥😥😥

I flew at my OH last weekend. I'm blaming continuous prospering too. It makes me feel very sedated, then angry and nasty, then wired, so I have stopped sleeping again.
I've had enough of this HRT merry-go-round. I feel increasingly unhinged as the months pass.

But to answer your question, I think the estring supplies a continuous low dose of oestrogen to your V. Utrogestan when taken vaginally is absorbed into the walls of the uterus. I don't think one cancels out the other!
I used to use a combined hormone lozenge for hrt. It dissolved in my gum. I absorbed all three hormones (oestrogen, progesterone and testosterone) at the same time. In principle it's exactly the same scenario.

Thanks a Birdy, it'll am feeling very unhinges, I felt great in October and November when I'd started on the tostran too.
But the utrogestan effects are building up the more I'm taking, and on conti there will be no break. I don't want cyclical as I'm well past menopause (5 years)
I'm feeling that another coil might suit be better, and hope that in 4/5 years time, there may be other alternatives, or at least I might have retired so the effects of utrogestan could be easier to tolerate.

I'm very anxious about having this coil removed and another put it, especially as it was very uncomfortable first time 4 years ago, but I can't continue feeling as I do, and fear it will get worse not better with continuous use.

Hair is ok, it's not been great since menopause (hairdressing was my original career).....my hair texture has changed, much frizzier than it used to be, and generally drier, pretty much sums me up really! 😀 nails too.

I think my hair has thinned since menopause and HRT and notice loose hairs, and hair in the catcher after a shower, but I am fortunate to have fairly thick hair.

I have also found the ‘right' shampoo and conditioner routine that suits my hair, and I've started taking hair, skin and nail supplement, to see if helps with my general dryness

Birdy, do you roller coast through out  the day? This morning I was all over the place in my head, over emotional and over thinking, feeling totally crazy....now though, I'm feeling quite good, and energised etc,
I wonder if once my oestrogel and tiniest dot of tostran get to work it helps for a while?
But saying that, yesterday I felt crazy for most of the day, so I dont know 🤷‍♀️

Birdy, I've been on my previous regime for 4 years, with mir3na, never felt like this.
Last time I felt like this was before I went on HRT, and the anxiety and craziness, depressive slumps, paranoia mood swings and overthinking, plus hot flushes, we're my main reasons for going on it....never expected to feel like this whilst using HRT 😩

Hi Sammiejane, to answer your questions:
I haven't noticed any change in my hair on this regime - I am lucky enough to have fairly thick hair and seems the same as ever so far. I started the testogel a bit later, maybe a couple of months in. Hope that helps x

Another query, I'm trying utrogestan vaginally tonight to see if I have less side effects. Ive inserted it high into my vagina, and kept my estring in, not sure if it's right or not?

How do those of you that use vagifem and utrogestan vaginally get on?

Also I've read on dr newsons site that used vaginally as part of continuous HRT, 100mg every OTHER night?
Is that what you do? Or do you use it every night as per oral continuous  dose?

No adverse effect from first night of vaginal use.....possibly a little less foggy headed this morning, but too early to judge.

I think I'll continue vaginally until I see specialist on Tuesday and tell her how I've felt, and what I'm trying, then see whether she thinks coil can be removed and carry in with utrogestan for another 6-8 weeks and review again, or whether I should just go for another coil and review all this malarkey again in 4/5 years! 🤯
