How do you know this Birdy?

My sleep is awful these days and I know my cortisol is messed up due to prolonged stress

Interesting. I have been happy on 100mg continuous, to the point where I felt that since I do well with progesterone, maybe 200mg would be even better. So I tried upping to 200mg for a week, and after a week I noticed the same sleep issues as Birdy, I couldn't fall asleep. Some say they feel like a zombie on that dose, but I was not. I realized this must've also thrown my P:E ratio out of whack. Back to 100mg this week and falling asleep as normal.

Birdy, I also felt terrible without the progesterone. Seems 100mg is my sweet spot. I'll stop tinkering with that side of the equation now.

Sounds like that's why I don't sleep all that well on the progesterone phase of my cycle?  Just a bit more wired and restless.

Birdy, I worked it out mostly by myself and with the help of a hormonal migraine specialist.

I started having silent migraines at the onset of the menopause and I had a Mirena coil at the time.  My migraines always came during the progesterone phase of HRT so I wrongly assumed I had suddenly developed progesterone intolerance.

Long story short, it turns out that I started having migraines at menopause because I had stopped producing my own progesterone which had acted like a protectorate and prevented the oestrogen spikes during my reproductive years hence no migraines.   My own produced progesterone balanced my oestrogen in a way that neither synthetic progesterone or Utrogestan could.

In theory, it could be argued that Utrogestan, being body identical, should have worked if used every day because it is very similar to the progesterone I produced myself but it didn't because the dose was too high and the delivery system was wrong so it did not balance my hormones and in fact made the oestrogen spikes worse.

I now use a bespoke 50mg dose of progesterone every day alongside oestrogen and testosterone and I don't have any side effects at all and my hormones are now well balanced and I feel the same all the time with the added bonus of no periods.  It complements oestrogen and has a calming effect without making me feel tired or depressed and that is because of the way it is absorbed.

Obviously I'm only speaking for myself here and realise I probably have an unusual problem but it's literally the only form of progesterone I can take.

I hope my experience can help others.

I do take it orally. I tried vaginally, and didn't feel noticeably different (other than some uterine cramping). I switched back to oral because I don't want any more reasons to avoid sexy time (if the mood ever comes back)!

Do you have to avoid ? Can't you just put it in immediately before sleeping? How many hours before it's gone?

I think I read somewhere that you should leave it an hour after inserting Utrogestan before "sexy time" but I could be wrong.
I think it is the idea of adding any "fluid"  :) to the mix which may dilute and hamper absorption.  Obviously Utro dissolves quick but the absorption process is much longer.

Shannonplussed- I got uterine cramping on inserting Utro for the first 3 cycles (it may be different if you take continuously?) but then it went away.  The first 2 lots were quite bad I had to take paracetamol as the pain woke me in the night.  After that it was plain sailing.

I haven't noticed a change in my hair either way. it's been lovely for a long time. I'm with you on the idea to be sure to pair progesterone to balance your estrogen for hair. Think of pregnant ladies with lustrous hair, while they are high in progesterone. Then around 3 months post partum (if I recall correctly), the hair fall begins. The hair that would have naturally been shed anyway if not pregnant mind you. It just delays the inevitable.
