Starting Sandrena 1.0mg gel & Utrogestan 100mg capsules
« on: November 28, 2019, 02:47:26 PM »

Hi, I am 54 year old, last period over 3 years ago.  Have been to GP today to discuss HRT,  I had researched what was I wanted to try, and my GP was happy with my choices.  My only concern is I've been told to apply 1.0 mg gel every day & take one 100mg Utrogestan capsule for 14 days of the month.  The more I've been reading the more confused I'm getting myself.  I've read some women are taking the Utrogestan daily not just for 14 days? I just don't really want to go back to having bleeds.    Not sure if it matters but my symptoms are hot flushes, night sweats, brain fog, dizziness and anxiety to name but a few! Any help much appreciated  :)😊

Hi Pam001

 :welcomemm:

You have been given the wrong advice by your GP here...the licensed dose for cyclical Utrogestan is actually 200 mg for 12 days per 28. If you are post-menopause as you are, then you take the progesterone daily or sometimes 25 days out of 28. This should be set out in the patient leaflet.  Maybe there was a reason for the doc prescribing less? This is the no-bleed regime, although some bleeding or spotting may be expected in the first 6 months as your womb gets used to having oestrogen again. However some women start with just oestrogen only for a while to see how they feel on this before inroducing the protgesterone ie take it cyclically eg for 3 months. Some however thrive on the daily regime from the start so you may be fine!

Good news is that hopefully soon you will say goodbye to the flushes, and sweats - you may well get a few side effects at first but bear with them and let them settle and hopefully you will be on the road to feeling a lot more like yourself soon :)

Thanks Hurdity,
I think I'll give my GP a ring, she wasn't that knowledgeable to be honest. 😩 .

hurdity

please can i ask you a couple of questions need your advice

i'm using the estrogel as you know and have been having hair loss not sure if it's gel or not causing it or just estradiol itself

my dermatologist wants me to stop estrogel for 4 months to see if the hair cycle tricks itself out of shedding mode and we will then know if it is estrogen causing if it continues then they know estrogen isn't the cause and could possible be hormone imbalance as isn't low estrogen as i didn't have shedding prior to starting hrt and my estrogen levels are fine !

menopause on the other hand don't want me to stop it because of bone and heart health , they have agreed for me to try testosterone as my levels are low 0.7 but this could make hairloss worse ! but if it dosent improve could then add in progesterone.

here are my questions : if it's an imbalance in hormones should testosterone in theory help ?

if it was the medication would changing the estrogen to say sandrena gel / patch if can get any improve it ? my menopause said that changing the estrogen part would make no difference as all contain estrogen and may not obsorb as well from something else ! but if it is estrogel which a few ladies on here have noticed hairloss since starting it surely changing may make a difference?

i'm so very confused and really don't understand it all i'm tired of loosing my hair and not feeling great !

i had my blood levels tested and had them done 10days apart because they forgot the SHBG hormone on the first lot so estrogen on first reason 368 testosterone 0.7 then 10 days later estrogen 113 testosterone 0.9

thanks hurdity

Hi sammijane

I answered your Q re the blood tests on another thread here: https://www.menopausematters.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,45656.msg742455.html#msg742455

Sorry but it's getting confusing posting the same thing on lots of different threads. Please start threads of your own and then those who are trying to help can at least follow what;s been said and who has said it? Just trying to be as helpful as we can and we all have limited time.

I am so sorry about your hair loss problem - but most of us are also at a loss to know how to help - as you are already seeing two different specialists who are themsleves contradicting each other. It is a very complex issue and you can only try different things for a reasonable time (a few weeks?) and see what happens?

I really hope you get to the bottom of it soon  :bighug:
