Weird Menopause
« on: October 24, 2019, 08:47:09 PM »

Hi everyone, I just wondered if anyone had any advice.
I started the menopause in my early forties and now I am almost 50 and it doesn't seem like it wants to leave.
I have hot flushes constantly and sex is impossible as is a pap smear.
I have had countless tests to check it's nothing else all they found was gallstones and everything else is normal.
I have tried HRT pessaries which changed nothing at all. I have tried various lubes including Sylk which have no affect. It's like my vagina has decided it's had enough and there's no entry.
My gynaecologist has now referred me to a menopause specialist and she wants me to have a bone scan. Is this normal?
I haven't been able to have sex since this all started apparently my cervix is tilted whatever that means.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi Grumps

 :welcomemm:

Sorry to hear about your menopause symptoms.

When was your last period? Once you've had your last period then for the next two years oestrogen levels drop considerably for the next approx 2 years and then roughly level out at a lower level. Sometimes women find symptoms worsen ( or some only start) at this point.

It is really important if you have VA to use local oestrogen as this will not get better on its own nor with lubes. Have a look at the menu under HRT preparations and you will see all the vaginal oestrogen treatments available as well as some moisturisers. I'm not an expert on this but do read maryjane's posts - she has written a book about VA. Also the "Burning Club" thread in  the private lives section. if you have been given pessaries you need to use them daily for at least a fortnight and then twice weekly therefater. Symptoms will return if you stop. If these don;t suit you there are other preparations to try if you look at the menus.

Not sure about tilted cervix - I haven;t heard of that but it should not prevent normal function - has it been a problem before? I have a tilted uterus ( as do many women) but this doesn't really affect anything - not that I;ve experienced anyway.

Do think about HRT to deal with your flushes if these are affecting quailty of life - according to NICE Guidelines this is the first lne of treatment formenopausal symptoms. Also some women need systemic HRT as well as local oestrogen to get completely comfortable in the vag area.

Re bone scan - you wouldn;t normally be offered this unless you are at risk of osteoporosis and maybe if your last period ( ie menoipause) was much earlier than the average age of menopause. If your doc has referrred you for this then definitley take them up on it as it isn't routine I don't think.

Well done also on getting referral to menopause clinic - those appts are like hen's teeth! Which part of the country are you in and did you have a long wait?

Hopefully someone else will be along to help...all the best with your appointments and on deciding the best way forward!
