BMS Response to the UK Government's new measures to tackle HRT shortages

3 October 2019

The British Menopause Society welcomes the Government's new measures (3 Oct 2019) that restrict exporting hormone replacement therapy (HRT) outside the UK. These measures are likely to benefit many women affected by the ongoing HRT manufacturing and supply shortages.

The British Menopause Society continues to work with the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG), Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Health (FSRH) and the Department of Health and Social Care to address the current situation with the objective of understanding the reasons behind the shortages in HRT availability and to explore measures to resolve this and preventing it happening again in the future. The British Menopause Society has also been liaising with the Department of Health and Social Care regarding HRT product availability and producing regular updates on the availability of HRT products to help advise clinical practitioners and women regarding available HRT products and suitable HRT alternatives if they are unable to obtain their current preparations.

The Government's decision will assist with ensuring that existing supplies of HRT remain in the UK for the benefit of patients in the UK seeking to obtain such preparations.
