Headaches, hormones and hayfever
« on: September 22, 2019, 12:22:39 PM »

I have always had hormonal headaches. Usually occurring 2/3 days before my period and 2 days during it. Since going on HRT my headaches are generally reduced. However, over the summer they were horrendous with them occurring on several occasions at patch change over. They don't seem to be cyclic i.e. they occur during both parts of the sequi cycle. I wondered if maybe as well as hormones acting as triggers if they are hayfever related. I do get hayfever mildly, but my son gets it badly and he said to me that he had noticed that when I got a bad headache it was when his hayfever was particularly bad. Anyone any thoughts? Medication doesn't touch them. I have taken one a day hayfever tablets  and steroid nasal spray but am worried that these add to dryness issues. My headaches have been better so far this month.

I have gone the other way - no hormonal headaches to speak of as such, then about 15 months ago the frequency increased. In fact that was my main reason for going on to HRT. Although the headaches reduced, the remaining side effects were not worth it so I stopped it last week.

I have had some sneezing and bunged up nostril times (just one) and husband has too, so I do think there is something in the air which is affecting us all

One of my friends told me she was going to get her daith pierced as it was supposed to help with headaches and migraines. She noticed a definite reduction in hers. I had mine done on Friday, and although it's early days I'm hopeful!

Hi

Sounds familiar!  I used to get headaches just prior to my periods which used to continue for a good few days into them.  I hated them.

Like you, I had really bad headaches this summer which I also put down to hayfever (which I used to get only mildly and occasionally but have noticed that my hayfever has got worse since menopause).

I noticed that the headaches this year coincided with the days when the pollen count was high.  My hayfever tablets didn't seem to help (they got rid of the sore eyes and sneezing but not the headaches).  I've also noticed that my nasal passages are really dry the last few years.

My headaches do feel like sinuses Jaycee, but I had a ENT referral before being referred to a menopause clinic and all was ok. Mogster let me know how you get on with the piercing, sounds interesting. I think we have talked about headaches before. I'm just hoping for some respite with the poorere weather.  There seems to be little knowledge about headaches and the menopause and I've come across some negative attitudes re using HRT. I'd love to speak to a specialist who could make recommendadtions re appropriate / best HRT regime. DLC snap!

I started HRT this year (Femoston Conti) and when I started with these headaches this Summer I blamed the tablets and nearly gave up.  My doctor was really good and suggested that the headaches might be due to the pollen count being high (I'd only taken a couple of tablets at the time).  I spent the entire Summer monitoring the pollen count and right enough, when it was high I had a headache.

I'm not an expert on antihistamines but I think the older ones that make you drowsy are the worst for drying you out.  I take Loratadine when I need to.   Didn't help much with the headaches mind you.

I have noticed with the menopause generally though that everything is dry (dry enough to be a nuisance) - nose, sinuses, itchy ears, eyelids, VA  etc etc.  I'm trying to get used it all and find a way of managing :-)

Ah the three H's, Headaches, Hormones, Hayfever, Hate them all!

Apparently women of menopausal age can have increased allergies of all kinds, including hayfever and food allergies/intolerances.

I had hormonal headaches, and bad hormonal migraines but they all but disappeared after starting hrt(gel)
And hrt is meant to help with allergies that have started or get worse during meno if you believe this article.
