Confused
« on: June 28, 2019, 11:56:25 AM »

Hello

I'm 55 and post menopause thought I was getting through ok without hrt as I have never been on the pill when I got a water infection which I thought was due to me not drinking enough as I was helping my son move.  Antibiotics did not work as I was still getting pain after going the loo but the pain was only on the exterior skin not inside like other utis that I have had.  Doc gave me Vagifem with no explanation.  Pain became excruciating couldn't sit or bend as it felt like everything was pulling.  Have now taken Vagifem for the last 4 months and it is slowly getting better but still have exterior soreness.  Doc then gave me steroid cream which has eased it slightly.  I can't seem to get an answer from doc as to whether I have vaginal dryness or something else is going on downstairs !

Does anyone relate to this?

Yep!   If your GP doesn't explain issues then he/she shouldn't be sitting behind that desk  :bang: however, if you have a GP that doesn't explain, make an appt. with your Practice Nurse and ask for more information.

VA mimics urine infection-type symptoms really really well.  How ofter are you using the 'vagifem' ?

I'm taking it twice a week.

The doc I saw was the specialist in women's health but I don't think she is that specialised! I am thinking of going private to see a gynaecologist as fed up with nhs

Hi Patsie, welcome to the forum.

Did you do the initial 14 day loading dose of Vagifem? They tell you to drop down to twice a week after that, but for many this is not enough. The dose recommended by the British Menopause Society is now every other day or up to 5 times a week. You could try doing a reload and then drop to whatever dose suits. You could also ask to try Ovestin instead, which can be used internally and also on the labia.

You can ask (or tell?) the GP to refer you to a menopause clinic on the NHS or, if you decide to go privately, make sure you see a menopause specialist,  not just a gynaecologist. GPs and even gynaecologists are not often clued up about meno issues. This certainly includes GPs who purport to be specialists in women's health. The one at my practice told me "HRT is very dangerous". She obviously has no training in this area.

The exterior soreness may be helped by a vaginal moisturiser. The best ones are the Yes products,  pH matched to the vagina.
