Ibs and diverticulitis
« on: June 25, 2019, 05:19:18 PM »

Hi ladies, well to say I'm fed up is an understatement. I took poorly in January and after four internal and external scans, my right ovary wasn't showing, so at first they thought I'd had an ovarian cyst rupture as I'd had heavy bleeding for two week. I then have a pelvic mri only to find that my ovary had made an appearance back again but both ovaries had shrunk in size, I was told at this point I had diverticulitis but it wouldn't cause me any harm until I'm a lot older.
I then have a laparoscopy and a historoscopy to check things further. My diverticulitis had flared so badly that it took me months to recover.
Fast forward to three weeks ago I was told that I was menopausal/post menopausal and was put on hrt, I can cope with all this until the last few weeks I haven't felt great because of problems again with my bowel. Today I've been told I have ibs and to be honest this has just about finished me off. I now feel like this is all too much, it's one thing after the other.
I'm trying to read up on it, I know what I should and shouldn't eat with my diverticulitis but when I look at what I should eat with ibs it's the opposite to diverticulitis. So it looks like a very limited diet from now on.
Sorry for the long message. My question is does anyone else on here suffer with diverticulitis and ibs?

Hello New Girl  ;)

I'm literally just going through the same thing!
I had IBS diagnosed years ago.
I was diagnosed with partial bowel obstructions due to abdominal adhesion problems in 2016/2017. And recently been hospitalised due to a newly diagnosed episode of Diverticulitis brought on from some dodgy medication I've been taking  ::)
The advice I've been given so far is high residue diet to help prevent Diverticulitis minus foods.i know disagree with me eg nuts
Then if Diverticula flare go to a low residue diet to help it settle. Plus might need a course of antibiotics too.
To add to my issues i had two hypoglycaemic episodes in hospital so might need to consider a ‘prediabetic' diet too, as well as avoiding the foods I know make my Psoriatic Arthritis flare eg raw tomatoes, oranges  ;D
Would be interested to hear how you get on  :foryou:

Hi new girl, same here, ibs for 30 years and colonoscopy showed up diverticulitis,it's very common in people of a certain age 😏 I've also a wheat intolerance,so between the three it can be a bit of a nightmare,if you have a flare up,if it doesn't go by itself get antibiotics they soon shift it. I also take mebeverine which is also called colofac,it stops spasms & has helped me immensely

Hi New girl,
I have had lots of stomach / bowel issues over the last year and have lost over a stone in weight (currently around 7 stone 12), probably due to me cutting out as much refined sugar and fat from my diet as possible and also because I feel nervous that eating may be making it worse. Though in actual fact food doesn't seem to make any difference at all. I've had a CT colonoscopy which didn't show anything so consultant said he thought it was IBS. At around the same time I started on HRT and since building up to a whole patch (evorel sequi) my stomach / bowels have been so much better, particularly on the oestrogen patches. So it seems likely to me that low oestrogen causes my problems, or at least is a contributor, which the meno specialist thought was the case.

Hopefully HRT may help with some of your symptoms. Let us know how you get on.
