Increasing oestrogen patch dosage
« on: June 10, 2019, 06:39:06 AM »

Morning - I know ladies on oestrogel can play around a little with the dosage to see what level controls symptoms, but can anyone tell me the best way to do this with Estradot Patch. I don't absorb all that well and need at least 100mg patch. (I am using Utrogestran vaginallly continuously for the progesterone).
I am wondering which method may work best between leaving the old patch on at the same time as the new one, sticking on an extra quarter patch along with the 100mg patch, or just changing the 100mg patch a little sooner than 3 1/2 days?  My symptoms are almost under control and any advise on how best to try a small amount more would be appreciated.  Many thanks!

The menopause specialist advised me to change patches (evorel sequi) every 3 days as he said that was what they were intended for and are the instructions say twice a week so that people don't get in a muddle with them

My gynae upped my estradot dose to 150 and said to cut a 100 patch in half and stick both on at same time.
I cut the patch across the line not in the same direction as I find it makes it easier to peel.
I absorb very poorly so I'm now on 200.

I dont know if cutting effects the patch but my doc seemed to think its o.k. I change every 3 days.

I wonder what kind of a (male?) eejit thought that one up? Why would anyone get muddled up with the instruction "one every three days"? Well, a woman can hardly be expected to get her silly little head round that one! So this has led to us all underdosing then?

TBF he suggested that's what the manufacturers suggest and wasn't his opinion. He said it would be easy to set up a reminder on a phone, etc

Yes, I figured it must be someone at the manufacturers, so thanks for passing on this info. I will start changing my Estradot every three days.

I have no idea where the figure of 3 days came from.  We will not be underdosed! The product monograph produced by the company state they should be changed twice a week and that the patches contains sufficient hormone to provide a steady release for up to 4 days. I used to alternate between 3 and 4 days for years without problems. Then I changed for the last couple of years to 3.5 days and more recently to 3 days ( as it seems to be coming unstuck a bit now - I think my skin has changed as I'm getting older ...!) - but provided you are on the right dose and absorb it well then 3.5 days should be fine if it is stuck well over the time period - for me this was monday eve and friday morning. It's also not a precise figure but an average over a population of women. You need to be taking the dose of oestrogen that makes you feel well over the dosing period ie twice a week - but of course if you want to do 3 days then go ahead!!! Some women can last longer on a patch too!

Cheery C I would try changing every 3 days especially if it's coming unstuck but if this doesn't work then I would try a 25 mcg patch too rather than keeping the old patch on as that is very rough and ready....
