Hi I am wondering if anyone on here takes thyroxine for thyroid and was advised that hrt would not be a good option to start because of the thyroid? I'm going back AGAIN to speak with G.P but any help greatly appreciated. They wanted me to take an anti depressant but I'm not feeling this is the right option, or are anti depressants used for menopause symptoms?

Hi!  Maybe put thyroid into the search box here and see what pops up? 

ADs are often prescribed by GPs who know nowt about menopause.  Some can help with anxiety but if you don't have depression or anxiety?

Hi moonsquatters    There are several of us on Thyroxine with HRT (I take T3 too).  They are compatible, but with 2 things to bear in mind: 1) oral forms of oestrogen are known to increase thyroid binding globulin (TBG) which makes less thyroxine available for use in the body, so probably better to start with transdermal HRT - patch or gel. 2) I have found that even transdermal types have a slight (reducing) effect on my thyroid levels, so have had to tweak my thyroid meds several times while trying to find the most effective & tolerable form of HRT.  Thyroid bloods should be carried out approx 6 weeks & 3 months after starting HRT, so your Thyroxine dosage can be tweaked if need be.  Please come back with any further questions & don't be alone with any worries.  There is lots of support on here & many lovely ladies will want to help.

I am on thyroxine and  transdermal HRT patches. Only started the patches in April. I have had a blood test done very recently but don't yet have the result.

Hello moonsquatters, I have taken 50 microg of Levothyroxine and use Evorel 25 patch twice week for about 8 years.  No doctor has ever said anything to me about using them together and I have only ever had usual yearly blood test.  I have friends who take anti dep instead of HRT to help with symptoms, I think like all medications they can affect how other things work including herbal stuff.  It really is trial and error. good luck.

Ive been on 75 mg of thyroxine and use an evorel patch of about 85 ( I cut down a patch of 100 ) For 11 years and interactions have never been mentioned. I have a blood test every year and that comes back with no issues. My thyroid is at bottom of normal range and gp said she likes lAdies to take thyroxine if it's low even if it's within recommended parameters .

Hi moonsquatters, I take 100mcg Levothyroxine and on Everol 75mcg & Provera 5mg. I was never told by any professional that there could be any affects on my TSH etc from taking HRT. However I discovered this on reading this forum, I'm sure it was Wrensong in fact who made me aware in her posts. I have annual levels checked no problems for the last 15+ years, however only started HRT spring time this year. Following wrensongs posts I asked GP to check my levels 3 months after starting HRT, within normal range. I have changed HRT regime to what I've written above, next month will be 3 months on it, will ask for levels to be checked again, although as advised it is less likely to cause an issue via transdermal route.
GP is telling you a load of rubbish, put thyroid into search box & read posts relating to it, also have a look on the website & elsewhere see what info you can get & print off to shove under your GP's nose. If he/she still not in agreement, ask to get referral to menopause clinic/specialist or see if any of the GP's in the practice have an interest or specialise in women's health (this does not always mean they are any more clued up, unfortunatley!) x
