Very high prolactin; undetactable oestradiol...Help?!
« on: May 30, 2019, 11:09:12 AM »

Hi ladies,

Bit of a specialist question and I will return to gp at some point but wondered if anyone could shed some light on my situation.
I've been monitoring my hormones via private testing and my oesradiol has been at menopausal levels each time, but it's been detectable eg 32.3p/mol

However, most recently it's plummeted further: now "less than 18.4p/mol" so obvs tests aren't sensitive enough to give me a figure.

This, in itself seems surprising but i guess I'm not experiencing periods and I'm 47 and have most definitely been leading up to menopause these last few years (for sure!)- it's just that i thought that oestrogen would remain detectable.

But, my prolactin is now very high, having been within normal range previously
It's 880 mu/l which is significantly out of range.

I keep reading that high prolactin can result in low oestrogen but is the reverse true? I expect my oestrogen to be low at age 47.
I've also read that high prolactin will result in decreased periods but, given that I'm menopausal, that's obvs my normal anyway.
I've even read that a tight (around the chest area) bra could raise prolactin and i have started an exercise regime (nothing major!) which necessarily involves a tight bra!! didn't do the test just after wearing it, but still...
then there's possibility of low thyroid and benign tumour of pituitary gland.
Or maybe just an aberration!

I'm not on HRT
I am on venlafaxine but have been steadily decreasing it so seems unlikely to be the cause (it's never affected reading before)

I guess I'm a bit alarmed that my oesradiol is so low
i know it's a bit of a niche subject but can anyone help?!!!
Thank you x

Hi vintagefiend - your post got missed!

I don't know anything about prolactin - sorry. Also - what type of private blood tests were they - salivary or blood tests from finger ****? It may well be that they are not accurate anyway. If you are post-menopausal then your estradiol levels will be low.

If you are concerned about the pro-lactin then do ask your doc.

I presume your periods stopped more than 12 months ago? It doesn't matter in itself that the oestrogen is very low as this is normal for post-menopause if you are, but at your age (still young and not yet at the average natural age of menopause) you might want to start a low dose HRT to bring levels up and you may well live another 30-40 years in an oestrogen deficient state and there can be health consequences.

Thanks for replying, Hurdity!
Yes, I'll keep an eye on it- I have since read that it's actually possible that exercise can increase prolactin temporarily.
I've started a regime so my body's prob in a state of shock!
Thanks for the advice- I'm tentatively trying HRT  :) :)
