Longer cycle and HRT
« on: June 01, 2019, 05:32:15 PM »

Ive read on here that some women have adapted their HRT regime to accomodate a longer natural cycle.

I would be grateful to hear from anyone who has done this and if it works for you, has advantages / disadvantages.

Also what your GP or menopause specialsit thinks of it.

Many thanks

Thanks StellaJane, sounds intersting. I want to avoid having progesterone as much as possible and always had a longer cycle that 28 days. Did you have regular pelvic scans?

I was wondering about people who have a natural cycle of 5 , 6 or more weeks so would only have progesterone evry 5/6 or whatever weeks.

I'm concerned about the build up of the lining of the uterus. It's hard to know what to do for the best.

Hi
I only use utrogestan every 12 weeks under specialist care. I can't tolerate it anymore than that. I have regular scans and so far have had no problems x

I have a natural 6 week cycle though it's a bit variable as it can be anything from 5-7 weeks. Lining thin before hrt after 40 years of natural 6 week cycle, hasn't been checked since. I have carried on with a 6 week cycle as it causes fewer problems for me. 28 day cycle results in bleeding at odd times. Gp doesn't know, mostly because she knows very little about hrt and I haven't seen since this decision. If you have a natural 28 day cycle no-one would suggest you change it so why would you meddle with it just because yours isn't the usual length? The hrt is supposed to work with your body not against it.

Thanks, sounds really promising. It's been great having 3 weeks of evorel 50. Starting evorel conti for 2 weeks and see how it goes. I have been doing the prescribed way for the last 10 months but only at low dosage and it was only when I upped it to a whole patch that I seemed to have problems, which is why I thought Id revert back to a longer cycle, though only going to try 5 weeks for now.

Hi there - yes I do longer cycle. There is no way I would do a monthly one - haven't done that since 2010. Doc (gynae specialist GP at my local practice) is fine with it. I was doing as Stellajane ie 6-8 weeks (this is total cycle from start of taking Utro to start of next dose) with 200 mg x 12 days vaginally but I am trialling a shorter cycle (approx 5 weeks) and reduced dose ( 11 days x 100 mg vag). I'm having a scan (NHS) in a couple of weeks due to some spotting at the wrong time. It does make sense to do a longer cycle anyway to tie in with your natural one - as long as the progesterone dose and duration is sufficient to keep your lining thin so maybe explore this with your doc and ask if you can have a couple of scans in the first year to check if going with your natural cycle length is sufficient to protect your uterus?

Thanks Hurdity. I'm due to see the menopause specialist in September and have enough HRT to keep me going until then so hopefully they'll agree to  the new regime. The dr has just referred me for a pelvic scan (not related to HRT) as I have a cyst that they monitor, that's not causing any problems. Hopefully the dates a bit away to see the impact of my new regime has.
