Night sweats
« on: May 06, 2019, 05:34:43 PM »

Over the last couple of months I've been woken once a week or so by the most horrendous night sweats, the like of which I haven't experienced since starting HRT over a year ago. I have no other symptoms of menopause, my hrt is doing a good job otherwise. I'm on Oestrogel, 4 pumps daily, and have a mirena iud. I have tried different methods of applying the oestrogel (rubbing in until dry, splitting dose between morning and evening) and have noticed no effect at all.

Does anyone have any advice on what could help. I use a light down duvet, cotton bedding, drink little alcohol and no caffeine from lunchtime onwards. I suppose the best advice is to visit my GP to review my HRT, but I've just moved and am yet to visit them, therefore they are an unknown entity as far as peri treatment goes. I do have NHS and private meno clinics nearby.

It's really unpleasant isn't it. I belong to a meno facebook group and everyone is advising me to cool the room/bed etc. I'm not hot, I'm just soaked!

Hi Stephjkm,

Cold sweats are a thing, I'm having them myself. Wake up covered in nothing but a fleece, shivering and cold to the bone in an unheated room and I'm still a sweaty pile!

I put it down to my hypothalamus being a hot mess as it's full of oestrogen receptors that aren't getting thier fix!

The only thing that's really helped me is HRT, before I started it my bouts of cold/hot flushes and chills would last hours.

Sorry I can't be of more help, I'm rather new to this myself (6 months stage 2 peri) but I thought I'd just pop in and say you're not the only one to get this.

Get along to the docs. If they don't help then most of us on here have used a specialist and can make recommendations. I've used the only 1 in Essex myself  ;)

Hi Steph are you in peri menopause? If so, it could be that your own hormones are fluctuating causing your oestrogen levels to drop which causes the night sweats. X

Hi Dotty, yes I expect it is exactly that. They don't happen so frequently that I get no sleep, but I'd rather they didn't happen at all!

I will brave my new GP and see if I can increase my oestrogel dose.

Hi Steph I know exactly what you mean. Night sweats were one of the last things to go for me. It took quite a while to be free of them. I still get the occasional one but it's very mild x

I don't feel hot. I just wake up soaked. It's really unpleasant. Is anything meno related pleasant though?

Not so far! It can be a bloody miserable time, can't it

I'm happy on my hrt, apart from these occassional night sweats. I'd like to increase my dose of oestrogel but as I'm at the upper recommended dose I probably need to discuss that with a doctor first.

I called my GP surgery earlier to.make an appointment - they don't have a GP with meno interest and they don't book appointments in advance.....

Have you considered you might not be absorbing the gel adequately? Ever thought about trying patches?

Yes, I've considered it, but as it is the only symptom that has returned and as I am allergic to patch glues, I want to persevere with oestrogel. I have heard of women going up to 6 pumps daily but I don't want to increase from 4 pumps until I've spoken to a doctor that knows what he/she is talking about!
