Horrible experience at GPs
« on: April 17, 2019, 08:41:00 PM »

So upset and angry  tonight. I moved to this area a couple of years ago and I am stuck by postcode to the nearest health centre.
I haven't had good care here but can't move.  They seem to run on locums or doctors who don't stay long.
Today I saw a locum on his first day there. He was horrible to me ....He never made eye contact with me once and told me how he treated menopause symptoms with anti depressants.  He didn't listen to anything I said and his attitude was awful.
I asked him about the mirena and he said he didn't know the procedure there.  I asked a bout the bio identical hormones and he said he couldnt prescribe something he hadn't before. I got so angry with him. I just feel so unfairly treated.
They incorrectly told me to have my mirena removed and they don't replace them in the surgery. My partner was with me and was disgusted in the GPS behaviour. He had a very arrogant attitude ....like I am the doctor and this is what I do. I knew more about hormones than he did and it was very clear. Sorry for ranting....I am bashing the keys. But also so upset to have been treated like this 😢😢😢

You need to contact the practice manager, either by phone or letter to make a complaint That must have been an awful experience for you Moonshine,
The practice manager must follow your complaint up.
Admittedly not all GP's know everything about all medical issues but he needs to be reported that he was not sympathetic or understanding to your condition.
So sorry you have had a bad experience - there are good doctors out there just not enough that know the correct treatment for the menopause.

Moonshine54 can you ask to be referred to your nearest menopause clinic, and that way you'll get appropriate advice/treatment?x

Hi
Put in it writing to the practice manger ( I don't think you can make complaints over the phone ) well you can't here where I am !!
Do can go back to GP and ask to be refred to your nearest menopause clinic and GP can't refuse you that ..

My last GP was the same such a horrible nature to be be a GP

Good luck and let us know how you get on

Aww thank you for your support.  I am in the middle of writing my complaint. I don't want anyone to be treated like that.  :'( :'( I am in the Liverpool  Manchester Wigan area. I think there is specialist clinics near by. It's if they will refer me.

Moonshine 54 you can search on here for your nearest meno clinic. Also I don't think GP can refuse to refer you, just be polite but firm. Don't give up, you'll get there x

What a horrible person. You are doing the right thing in reporting him Moonshine54. I hope you manage to get this sorted quickly. Searching for your nearest meno clinic will help because you can then ask to be referred to your choice. Good luck

I know Herdwick and I don't want anyone to be  treated like that . I have just written a letter of complaint and emailed it to the practice manager. It's has helped to process my anger a bit :)

Perhaps print out NHS guidelines for meno treatment and take it with you next time. He can't argue against that and you have evidence that he doesn't know what he's talking about. Ignorance is bad enough but if you're going to be arrogant you have to be right.

Good idea Sheila ! I agree I understand that some GPS don't know so much about hormones treatments. But it's not acceptable just to describe anti - depressants because you are not familiar with other options.   :-\ it should be a collaborative relationship.

Hi Moonshine54
Been through similar to you. Moved from London to Dorset not long ago and new GP. I'm on the patches, well first appointment went badly with him. He wanted me off the patches and on anti depressants and beta blockers for the hot flushes. Anyway I'm still on the patches a year later. It isn't easy with this menopause thing. You would think the GPs would know something by now. It's such a shame we have to go through this and made to feel we are the only ones with the menopause and mad!!
Hope you are okay xx

Hi Vicky
At least   you stood your ground. I just feel that  it shouldn't be such a battle to get the treatment  you need. It just causes more stress when you are already stressed. Xx

Moonshine, massive solidarity. A good GP is so hard to find re; hormonal issues.

My registered GP is a bitter, burnt out old misogynist so I specifically went for the female locum who listened to me, arranged tests etc. Shes clueless (my oestrogen/progesterone combination is apparently off licence) but at least she knows the drill and engaged with me!

Like the others i'd recommend you get yourself to a meno clinic. Pick your time carefully, I'd say go for a female locum if you can, Take those NICE guidelines with you but don't give up!

I myself am off to a meno clinic in 2 weeks.

Good luck & take no prisoners!  ;)
