mirena and depression
« on: April 03, 2019, 06:22:38 AM »

Hi,
I'm new member in Australia.  52 years old. I'm wondering what the forum thinks of the chances of the Mirena that I've had for 4 years (for HRT)  contributing to my "treatment resistant" depression?
I do have a past history of depression and anxiety in adolescence, perinatal and postnatal depression, and PMS worsening in peri. Began HRT and ADs for cyclical low mood in peri in my late 40s.  Mood a lot worse on Prog part of  patches so commenced Mirena with oestrogen patches.  Not much improvement but no worse either. Trialed Zoladex - worse.  For the last year now my mood has stopped being cyclical and is permanently extremely low and much worse than in peri. Could this be because i have reached menopause and ovaries are no longer "helping out"?. Have tried increasing oestrogen patches (even up to 200), various antidepressants and even TMS via psychiatrist over the last 18 mths with absolutely no improvement. I don't have any significant physical meno symptoms such as hot flushes. Antidepressants have always worked well for me in the past.  My Gynae was reluctant to remove the Mirena until I'd had some mood improvement in case removing it made me worse. My GP, (a meno specialist) has said the Mirena is highly unlikely to be the cause of my depression as it shouldn't be producing much Progesterone after 4 years. I am most definitely having it removed soon anyway and decreasing my oestrogen in preparation. The Dr said I would need to be down to a 50 mic patch for 3 months before it could be removed though. I would appreciate anyone's input.

Hi GraeBowie

I know that it does, I persevered with mine for 6 months and low mood never lifted. Within 48 hours of having it removed I was back to my old self!

That said I think it is worse for those of us with a sensitivity to hormone fluctuations/progesterone.  I had (undiagnosed) post natal depression after my first baby which went on it's own after 6 months, was fine with subsequent 3 pregnancies, only for issues to rear their ugly head again in Peri menopause. Could never tolerate the contraceptive pill either.

What I would say to you is that it requires careful handling. I am absolutely fine now (not medicated), but I know from past experience to be careful with progesterone. What works for me is an average dose of oestrogen (evorel 50) and the least amount of progesterone possible,  currently 7 days of Utrogestan (monitored).

Hope this helps x
