Utrogestan - mid cycle period
« on: March 30, 2019, 09:06:21 AM »

Hi everyone, I'm 46, early perimenopause and been on HRT for 4.5 months (Sandrena oestrogen gel 1mg and Utrogestan 200mg on days 15-26). I'm on day 13 of my cycle (so oestrogen only) and yesterday started bleeding like a proper, heavy period (my last one was lighter than usual). Is this normal or should I get it checked out and do I take my Utrogestan as planned on Monday or do I now wait 15 days from this new period to put me back in sync? Otherwise I'll be taking it on day 4 instead of 15 every month.

Hi Angelcakes

Same thing here, in my first month of taking HRT. I have no idea either. I either take it tomorrow, day 15, or I take it a week later, to tie in with my last period, which started a few days after starting evorel patches.

I guess i'll decide tomorrow, or maybe split the difference and go for a day midweek. It's scary taking it for the first time as I hear so much about side effects.  I have a seriously busy week at work so tempted to wait until next weekend but then I'll be stopping it for the first time just as my daughter who lives away visits over Easter. Am I reading too much into this?

Let me know what you decide. Also did you get side effects either starting or stopping utrogestan?

I didn't have a bleed earlier this month at all when I finished my Utrogestan.
I've been back on them for a week and have started a heavy period yesterday so I'm going to stop the tablets and allow a proper bleed then re start in 2 weeks.

Hi Angelcakes

 :welcomemm:

Tricky when you are peri-menopausal. I would take the progesterone at the time you are supposed to and see what happens over the next couple of months. If you are consistently out of sync by the same amount then you could shift your HRT cycle to coincide with your natural one - but it might not stay that way for long as ovulation becomes sporadic and more irregular as peri-menopause progresses.

Thanks ladies. I think I'll take it as planned tonight and see how I go. Maybe I'll get another bleed when I've finished my 12 days which will put me back on track? Something to look forward to ha ha

Sparkler, I would probably start on day 15. How are you going to use it - orally or vaginally? I'd been using it vaginally but tried a few oral last month and wish I hadn't! Bloating was ridiculous. Other than that, I had severe PMS on my last few days so going to monitor how I go this month. I think a lot of people struggle with the progesterone - it's the PMS hormone!

I took just 1 capsule last night (fear of side effects) and will take 2 tonight. Going to try it orally and see what happens. This timing split the difference between 15 days after starting estrogen and 15 days after the last period. We we all have to decide somehow!

Looked up the half life of utrogestan and it is 16.8+/- 2.3 hours, so doing the math that means it will build up a little over the 12 days but not a lot of build up, and once I stop it will be gone in about 2 days. The bit we can't control is how much our own bodies throw in on top, just to confuse things further.

I would consider the vaginal route if needed but am hoping to be fine orally. I had terrible PMS all my life so fngers crossed.

How are you feeling on the utrogestan?

I'm on day 10 and feeling pretty horrendous! Just about to draft a new post to see what other regimes people use for Utrogestan. I was at a menopause conference today and the specialist (who trained with Prof John Studd) said I should go to a menopause clinic as I must be progesterone intolerant. I haven't slept properly for 10 days and the PMS symptoms kicked in after 7 days 😥

Thanks StellaJane - I've trawled so much my head is fit to burst ha ha!
Think I either need to reduce dose/days of taking it (monitored obviously) or try something different as I've given it 5 months and felt suicidal last month!
