Utrogestan regimes if progesterone intolerant
« on: April 11, 2019, 07:33:43 PM »

For 5 months I've been using Utrogestan for progesterone (200mg used vaginally on days 15-26) but not sure I can keep going with it. I haven't slept properly for the last 10 days since starting and the PMS symptoms came on day 7 - mood swings, teary and bloated (this will last another 10 days until my period arrives and felt pretty suicidal last month!)
I was at a menopause conference today and Anne Henderson was speaking (she trained with Prof John Studd). When I mentioned it to her she said I must be progesterone intolerant and suggested I get a referral to a specialist menopause clinic who would hopefully put me on an alternative regime.
Has anyone else had success continuing Utrogestan but with a smaller dose/less days? I would be prepared to pay for an annual scan myself if necessary to check womb lining wasn't getting too thick.
I'm early perimenopause and having periods still so producing my own progesterone anyway.
I'm too frightened to try the Mirena as I don't think I'll do well with continuous progesterone in my system. I did use Provera for a couple of weeks last year (to stop an occasion of prolonged bleeding) and felt really well on it - although I was on holiday at the time so that could have been it! It's an option I suppose if I really can't continue with the Utrogestan.

I use it that way Angelcakes, but I am post meno.  I didn't do too well on it for the first few months 5 is probably about right with depressive symptoms and a bit of cramping and feeling "hormonal", now I am at month 8 and it has settled.  I do use a longer cycle through I go 4 weeks on oestrogen only and 10 days 200mg vaginally and the I get a bleed.  Utrogestan is the best  one I have used and I have tried a few over years, but you could be right, it could be too much progesterone, rather than intolerance because you have your own because you are still in peri.  I have heard tell of 100mg vaginally being sufficient because it is more effective vaginally than orally when it goes through the stomach and the liver in the digestion process.  Maybe Hurdity or one of the other ladies will comment on that especially as you are producing your own progesterone.  Mayeb that would be enough?

Unfortunately I can't help other than what I have said, I had a terrible time on Provera, so it would seem again, as with all things, meno, it really depends on how your body reacts.  Maybe try and hold out another couple of months if you can and see if it stops, if you can?  I know that is hard when you feel bad but maybe you are nearly there and it would be a shame to give up before you found out if it settled?

Utrogestan made me mad and odd and restless and depressed.

I didn't want a mirena as that hadn't suited me a few years ago.

I read about jaydess which is a much much lower progesterone than mirena and the menopause clinic agreed that it would be ok to have that and stop utrogestan.

They say they will offer me a scan in a year as the jaydess isn't licensed for hrt and they aren't sure it keeps the womb lining thin enough BUT she told me it's better than nothing for now.

I am peri and still having periods. I am two cycles in with the jaydess and my cycle is back to 28 days. No emotional symptoms or distress, no sleep changes and just a bit of pre-menstrual breast discomfort this month.

All in all I am happy and very relieved that I won't need to take utrogestan again.

That sounds good Orangefoot - a few on here are trialling that - mostly in London I think through C and W meno clinic? Does it still act as contraceptive?
